Need to learn about computer audio

I've started to read a lot of articles on soundcards/mp3 players/speakers/headphones and noticed that I have no idea what the majority of the people are talking about.

I would mainly like to learn more about computer audio details... when people start talking about DAC's, SPIO, SPDIF, etc etc my eyes glaze over and I wake up 10 minutes later with drool dripping from the corner of my mouth.

Can anyone recommend a good article that I could start reading?
 
Once you've got the basics from HowStuffWorks.com, check out the http://www.head-fi.org/ --> Computers-as-Source forum for some interesting discussions.

Just a word of warning, once you learn lots about sound quality etc it can get expensive! 😉
