Need to help 10 year old under stand 3 phase electric power.

We made a 3 phase AC generator, with 4 magnetic poles. I understand how it works, but he has no clue. I don't have time to really teach him the technical aspects of how it works on my own, so I want to get him some books to read. What are some good books for a 10 year old.

This is for his science fair project, he needs to know this to peddle off the project as something he did on his own.

Just let him crosswire the phases of some 240V 30A circuits. He'll learn something really quickly.

Incidentally, how good is his parents' health insurance policy? Does he have coverage?

 
I'm an EE grad and I still don't fully understand 3-phase power and electric machinery. What makes you think a 10 year old is going to grasp the concept?
 
just get a car battery and some jumper cables. oh, you might also need a clean rag so he doesn't bite his tongue.

Same here.

I can do calculations and circuits, but the idea of it (physically) is hard to grasp.

I dont need him to fully understand it. Just something very basic.

Also we need 4 of them, to test the affects of increasing the strength of the magnet and increasing the coiling. We will also test the affects of increasing the rotation of the magnet.

Same here.

no grad gresh out of school fully understands it.....infact, I am willing to bet that only a small fraction even persue it. Every EE takes the electronics route. Rarely do you see someone want to be a power engineer.

I think you are better off teaching that 10 y/o about the birds and the bees....not the normal ones though, the ones that like the same sex.
 
Give him a strew driver and tell him to stick it in a power socket. Current, conductor, shock. The 3 phases of electric power, don't fuck with it.
 
I was looking at the wiki articles on 3 phase power, AC, rotating magnetic field. These seem like good articles. I will have him read these.

There is nothing magical about three-phase power. It is simply three single phases synchronized and offset by 120 degrees.

Why three phases? Why not one or two or four? In 1-phase and 2-phase power, there are 120 moments per second when a sine wave is crossing zero volts. In 3-phase power, at any given moment one of the three phases is nearing a peak. High-power 3-phase motors (used in industrial applications) and things like 3-phase welding equipment therefore have even power output. Four phases would not significantly improve things but would add a fourth wire, so 3-phase is the natural settling point.
