Need to Get My Car Back

Well, my wife, kid, & I took a drive out to see my parents out in Colorado like we do every year, but this time, I did something stupid. I checked the antifreeze, I checked the spark plugs, I checked the transmission fluid, I checked the wiper fluid, I checked the tire pressure. Heck, I even replaced the O2 sensor, because it was giving intermittant signals.

Then we headed off. Exactly 1/2 way there, at 7 in the morning (traveled during the night so the kid would sleep through most of it) with everyone asleep, the car studders for a second & then I hear the worst thing I could ever hope to hear on a trip. It sounded like someone was taking a hammer drill to the engine.

Fortunately, I was just getting to an off ramp. Unfortunately, as I was coming to it, I noticed that there was... Corn fields, a shed with a bunch of oil pumps around it, & an abandoned gas station. Not reassuring. Needless to say, I checked everything (I came prepared with a full set of tools). Gas?...Check! Spark?...Check! Air?...Check! Should run, but only cranks. Timing belt?...Tight! Spark Plugs?...Stuck like nobody's business (I hand tighten them all the way in, so no, they weren't cross threaded to start)! Then I knew. I was stuck in the middle of know where & dropped a lifter. I had friggen run out of oil (car burned it about a quart every month or so, but my wife drove it mostly, so I hadn't thought about it & she hadn't mentioned it). Bad start to a vacation.

To make a long story short, I made friends with a bunch of farmers & got a ride to the nearest town an hour away (Hays, which I had already passed, so now I'm going backwards). Got myself a rental car (which if you didn't know that if you mention that the car broke down, you get automatic large discounts through your insurance company). Then I rented a car to get back & hope to find a way to tow the car home.

Well, that's the dilemma. What I thought would be the hard part (getting a car dolly) ended up being easy. A friend said his friend would offer me one, but not a vehicle to to it with. None of the rental places rent anything with hitches. Unless, you get a friggen 16ft moving truck from U-haul. Then they charge you by the mile & it ended up being about $600. I'm trying to stay closer to $80-100 (not to mention the extra $100 or so that I'll have to put out for gas). Of course all of my friends either don't have a truck. Have a truck, but don't want it going 1000 miles. Or just plain can't do without their vehicle for a day (which I suspect that they are just not wanting to).

Anyhow, I think I'm down to just renting, but I have an idea to rent a van (they rent full size vans that have unlimited milage) for $120 & putting my own ball hitch on there (they always have the hole for one in the bumper). However, I'm interested in any suggestions? In particular how to get the rental price down or how to get another vehicle that's not a 15 passenger van to do it.

Home Depot rents pickups...do they require in town? I'd assume they have hitches...

Might want to check coverage, I dont think you are insured if you tow anything.

I'm not sure on the requirements, but I do know that they charge by the hour & this'll probably be at least 16 hours (not to mention that it'll probably go into another day due to them not being open 16 hours.

I'm willing to chance coverage. I just want my darn car back.

Didn't know it was hourly. Have you tried all the rental places? I know down in AZ some friends rented a truck with a hitch....a Dodge Ram. I don't know what company though. Maybe call a rental place and ask if they have any suggestions?

Might it be more cost effective in this instance to have it towed to a nearby garage and have it repaired? Even farmers need cars repaired. Not a car guy, so I don't know the impact of a 'dropped lifter.' What is your vehicle?

Might try that. But if I do that, my evil scheme might not be viable anymore.

Engine will need to be rebuilt & even towing it to the closest repair shop will cost me over $200. I'm fully capable of replacing the engine, so that's my eventual hope.

Id so love to help you with this. I'm in Lawrence which sounds like its 3 hours from where died and have an F150 and a car trailer up at my folks house (i store it there).

UGH.. i just dont think i can swing it though since i'm oncall for another week and don't really have the time to head out there and get it, not to mention no keys or anything..

This sucks totally for you and i'm basically helpless to assist.

Yup, you're about 3 hours away. Well, thanks for the consideration anyhow. It's about 5 minutes west of WaKeeney, Kansas & I did leave the keys with the guy who owned the old gas station that I left it at. Funny thing is that he runs a shop out of the place (even has a lift), but said that it was out of his league. I don't know if I could feel good about having someone else fix my problem anyhow.

You've got a pm. Your car's in my neck of the woods, I may be able to help a bit..

Is it even worth going back after and fixing?

To me it is, a replacement engine would only be $200 or less at the local Pick-N-Pull (if I can only find one that hasn't been ravaged yet).

make/model/yr of your car?

1996 Geo Metro (I know, not worth much, but it is in excellent condition & I had to do a ton of fiberglass work to it for the subwoofer box, so I'm a bit attached).

Replied & thanks, though I'm not sure it'd work.

Don't have it, but they limit towing & such to the nearest town with a mechanic which means Hays which doesn't help much.

Check on renting a pickup from a company that will not charge mileage.

Many places (Enterprise for one) have discounts for week-end rentals.

Spend the week-end going to get the car - you should have no problem attaching a ball hitch to any pickup that is rented.

I'm sorry, but that made me chuckle. A sub in a Metro. I'm sure you get good mileage, though.

I would be hesitant to hook a car dolly and vehicle up to anything less than a frame hitch - those bumper mounts have never impressed me as being all that sturdy for any kind of towing.

Agreed in general, but it's a geo metro. I think I weigh more than a Geo Metro.

CLIFFS:

1. Drove worst car ever made on vacation.
2. Broke down half-way there.
3. Want subwoofer back because it is worth more than car.
4. Can someone offer cheese with my whine?

I guess you missed the part about the subwoofer and box. That had to have pushed it up over your weight. ;)

Sure enough, I've been checking Expedia & such for trucks & they don't show them, but they are actually avaliable at Enterprise. Shame that they don't offer a weekend rate for the trucks (exclusion). The funny thing though is that the cargo van is cheaper for the weekend than a day. I wonder if Enterprise has forgiven me yet for those parking tickets I got in England that I didn't pay for?

Well, I'm hoping to take it gentle. I know that those bumper mounts aren't all that, but it is really a light car as noted (by thepd7) & also as noted, the box really isn't a box, but fiberglass that has been grafted into the side panels. Half the reason I want to keep the car is because the boxes are part of the car & literally, the car is like new in every way except for the engine (I take really good car of my cars).

It was an unfortunate situation, but my purpose here wasn't to whine but get feedback on the best way to pick up a car in the middle of nowhere (which I am actually getting some ideas). I thought that the story would be interesting if nothing else. If nothing else, I just plain feel stupid. So I am incredibly appreciative of your oh so useful comments. I hope that you get the same in return. Oh, & if it's the worst car ever made, why has it made it to 240,000 for me & the only reason it died is because I didn't change the oil (was running plenty strong before hand). Also, I'm probably one of few people in these forums that can say I fill my tank (well used to) for $20 a week. That alone makes the car worth it to me.

I can...but I ride a motorcycle.

As for the towing...my MR2 has a towing capacity of 1500lbs. Seriously. Your Geo Metro weighs in the neighborhood of 1200, so I wouldn't have any qualms about towing it with a pickup truck, bumper hitch or not. Just go careful, careful.

Trucks...do any of the local places (Home Depot, etc) do overnight truck rentals? They're usually cheap and don't charge mileage, because they assume you'll just be in town...

Cheater, that's why I put a modifier in there.

Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about towing the car now. If an MR2 could do it, what couldn't (except another Geo LOL :) )

I'll check on the overnight truck thing. Maybe. Though, I'm thinking that they'll try to get me anyhow.
