Another note on manuals.
Our local library has a subscription to some sort of service that provides the online equivalent of a chilton's manual or such for alot of vehicles. I won't link to it, because you have to be a member of the library to access it.
But anyway, check out your local library!

Correct, the check engine light or MIL light indicates a trouble in the E.C.M, P.C.M. or their associated sensors.

(These are the little computers that run your drive train)

Yeah, my aunt just handed me over her car. The day i got it, the engine light went on. She then tells me "Oh yeah, BTW, you need to give the car an oil change. The last oil change was 20,000 miles ago". I can only imagine what trouble codes I will get.....
 
There are several different type of "ENGINE LIGHTS", oil change indicator lights and check engine lights, which one is on ?
 
That is most likely due from and overdue oil change, the light will have to be reset after changing it, year, make and model please.
 
Change the oil and filter, with the key removed from the ignition, disconnect the negative battery terminal for twenty minutes, reconnect and drive the vehicle in a normal fashion until fully warmed up, if the light comes back on, you have a trouble code stored in memory indicating a malfunction, thus you will have to retrieve the trouble code using the above link.

Remember to change your oil and filter on a warm engine.
