I have a final presentation in my science, technology and war class on the topic of our rights/privacy (relating to technology such as computers, phones, etc-you know, technology
) during "war". I put "war" in quotation marks because i may wish to deferentiate between a war such as the gulf war and the "war" on terrorism.
put simply, i'd like to consider what rights we (are asked to) give up during "war", how we react to these rights (possibly) being taken from us, what are the results of the rights being given up (any more effective?), and what happens down the road (do we get them back, etc)? I'm sure there are other aspects to this discussion as well (please feel free to chip in), but I think you can see where I'm going with this.
anyways, my final project is going to be a website with my own commentary on these issues, links to relevant sites, etc. I'm looking for sites that would be relevant to this topic-as potential links, sources of information, etc. Note that I'm likely only going to consider the 1990's and beyond (that may change as I continue collecting ideas and information).
Some of the ideas for sources I already have are:
2600.com (where I expect I will consistantly find a viewpoint against giving up rights)
ACLU
EFF
wired.com
politechblot (or something like that-im not at *my* computer now to get the exact site)
slashdot
senate and congress.gov
as you can see, i can easily find sites complaining about the lack of rights, but im having trouble finding sites with basic information about what the government is asking us to give up, as well as government sites explaining their logic.
Also, i'd like to include comments on the bill formerly known as SSSCA (CBD...whatever it is now-i can never remember the new name), the terrorist bill that passed so quickly after 9/11, and issues such as face scanning technology.
As you can imagine this is a large project-im sure i wont be able to include everything i want, but I hope to get most of the above included in some form. ANY advice, links, comments, etc would be great. The final project is due by the end of tuesday (late start i know-had another paper to occupy my time first); I would be happy to throw the page(s) up on geocities before then to get some feedback. I'd be interested in what you all might say.
thanks for any ideas or site links you can provide.
