I am going to physically destroy the disk anyway, but I need to make damn sure that noone can get to the files.

What's a good erasing program? At work I usually handed my disks off to the tech department, but I no longer have that privilege.

If you must know. It's pictures of me and my ex.

If its good why destroying it???

He's not destroying it he just wants to securely erase the data on it. Possibly to give it to someone else or sale it. This is a very wise thing to do. Go buy a used HD on ebay and it's very likely you can recover old data from it.

Maybe I'm not paranoid enough, but I don't see a reason to spend time erasing a drive that will be physically destroyed. Just smash the crap out of it.

A cutting torch will do the job and provide you pleasure at the same time. :)

I was wondering if there was a portable shredder you could buy that could shred a hard drive and anything else like paper documents. I think if someone could make this and marked it as such the do pretty well.

Check online for a paper shredding company nearby, and ask if they do HDD shredding. Most do. You can probably stop by and ask them to shred it in front of you for a few dollars. I had 100 shredded a few months ago for a few $ each. They'll even bring the shredder to your office, I guess as a sort of carnival for the IT staff. :D
