ok just got a sony z1 laptop
my house has cable modem, so i connected the laptop to that. instead of getting 100mbps im looking at status and its only at 10, why?

your cable modem lan output is set at 10mb.. the internet isnt fast enough, so manufacturers put a 10mb thinge instead. Its the cable modem that is doing this.

running it to the lan wont help, because the connector between the lan and the cable modem will still run at 10mb/s...but your laptop will connect and show 100mb/s when run thru a hub/switch.

Your internet connection can't be much more than 5 Mbps, so even 10 Mbps isn't a bottleneck. I wouldn't worry about it.

What he said..

Yup, a lot of routers are even 10/100 LAN but only capable of 10 for the WAN. 10mbit is faster than your internet connection and won't cause a bottleneck at all.
