So long story short I'm thinking of selling my new X1900XT to handle some issues that have come up.

Is there anything worth buying in the $100 or less range that will let me do some kind of modern gaming around 1024x768 (or 1280x### for widescreeon on my 2005FPW)? Obviously no eye candy

For only $100 I'd rather keep the XT ;) I need the full market value out of it at this point I'm afraid. However its looking like I might sell my whole desktop now, so those looking for a killer deal stay tuned ;)

7600GT is fast, but it is far more powerful than what is needed for 1024x768 gaming. Look into a used Radeon 9800 Pro or a Geforce 6600GT. Either one of those can play 99% of all games at 1024x768 at medium-high settings.

a 7600GT can't play many of todays games at max settings(without AA) even at 10X7.

Quake 4:
10X7 High

FEAR
10X7 MAX no soft shadows no AA

Oblivion:
10X7 med

GRAW:
10X7 med or med to low

Serious Sam 2:
10X7 med to high, or high to max

Tomb Raider Legends:
Not a consistent gaming experience even at 10X7 if you turn on next gen content.

aren't these more or less most of the games that you were anyways going to play

Thanks for the info guys, but I'm about 95% going to sell the entire desktop at this point. Feel free to continue the discussion as archive material for future posters :) Thanks!

The 2005fpw has a native res of 1680x1050. Just to let you know.

Also for a good midrange card, I'm going to have to agree with a 7600GT or for a step up, a cheap X1800XL (then flash to XT)

6600gt would do fine, since you said "no eye candy." Though, you will get eye candy. And most games run fine on 10x7.

are you kidding me?

i have a 7600gt, i know what im talking about unlike you

Q4: 1280*1024 4x AA 8x AF 60 FPS +
FEAR: 1280*1024 Soft Shadows 45 FPS+
Oblivion: Everything HIGH 1280*1024 HDR 35 FPS+
GRAW: Everything HIGH 1280*1024 45FPS+
Serious Sam and Tomb Raider i havent tried.

the 7600gt is MORE than enough for gaming at 1024*768

7600gs. It's faster than a 6600gt, and priced under $100. I bought a passively cooled one recently for $90-ish.

You have a 2005FPW? Then why don't you play at 1680x1050, with 16xAF and whatevertheheckaticardsgoupto AA? My 7800GT can't handle FEAR with 8xS AA and 16xAF at 1680x1050, a 7600 would just die under that.

You really need to stop going into every video card thread and badmouthing the 7600GT when it is extremely obvious to everyone with more than one braincell that you have no clue what you are talking about. You probably have never even used a 7600GT but you seem to want to act as the authority on what the card will or will not be able to do. I have a factory OCed XFX 7600GT and can play all the games you listed (and others) at much better settings than what you claim are the only settings the card can handle and have no problems whatsoever and the games look excellent. And just for the record, I use AA at either 2xQ or 4x depending on game, AF at 16x and even HDR in games that have that option.

The only game you have listed where you are even close to correct is TR Legend and that's only because from what I've read on other boards, there aren't many cards out there that will play that game with a "consistent gaming experience" with next-gen content enabled...even some of the top of the line, cream of the crop cards struggle with it. And because of that, guess what genius, I don't turn on the next-gen content and don't feel I'm missing anything necessary for an excellent gaming experience.

I guess we have differcnt thoughts on "high" then?

Please explain to me your version of "high".
Are all your sliders in the game set to the abslute right hand side, including shadows?

Plus AA and AF.

This to me would be called "high" including textures.

Yeah...all my sliders are to the right and I have 16x AF and HDR enabled. No AA as the NVidia drivers don't support AA and HDR at the same time. And everything is set on high which was the setting it defaulted to when I installed the game.

Look at the benchmarks for a 7800gt @ 12x10 w/ HDR there getting 13.2 FPS. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/oblivion_high-end_performance/page5.asp
And there using 8xAF!
Your telling me you can play like that on a 7600gt.

grass kills FPS

i have igrassminsize or something like that set to "120" instead of the default "80", all it does it make the grass less dense, it almost doubles FPS outside for me

I still find it hard to believe the person who claimed 35+ fps next to an Oblivion gate outside with all sliders maxed to the right at 1280x1024. In town or a dungeon, sure, I believe it.

I've got a 7600GT as well running on an Opty 144 @ 2.5 with 1GB of 2-2-2 Mushkin, and at 1024x768 in Oblivion I have most things maxed to the right, except for maybe specular distance at 50%, grass distance at 50%, and self shadows off. My iMinGrassSize is also 120, and I did some other tweaks as well and did a high res texture replacement mod (at no benchable perf hit), PLUS disabled vsynch in the menu launcher (it's enabled by default, disable it to get a boost in framerates, I don't even notice tearing in this game at all).

In towns I get about 50FPS, unless there are a lot of people casting shadows, then I get about 30, and if it's raining, take off a few more FPS. In dungeons, I usually get about 50FPS, and outside by an Oblivion gate I'll get about 25fps.

For some reason, in certain spots of hackdirt, my game crawls to a hault. Can't figure out why. But anyway...that's an approximate description of my experience in the game.

yeah, hackdirt kills my framerate too

Don't listen to the trolls, 7600GT is more than enough for 1024x768 on current games. I have a OC'ed X850XT (which is about the same as a 7600GT) and I can play all the games fine today even at 1280 x 1024. The most recent game I have, Prey, plays smooth with Max settings on 1280x1024 with 2x AA & 8x AF.
