I have a Nvidia 9800GT PCIx 2.0 card that was great, but is failing. I just got a EVGA GTX 750 PCIx 3.0 vid card. The nvidia drivers I have are from last November. As both cards use the same drivers, this is what I was thinking of doing:

Delete the old card in device manager.
Remove old card.
Install the new card.

Should there be any problems if I do it that way? Should I update the latest geforce drivers? I have a nearly 5 year old Gigabyte X58 chipset motherbaord.

Sounds like you got it. After installing the new card, you will want to update the drivers probably. It may not be mandatory, but it will likely give you performance boosts with newer drivers that come out.

put in new card, install new drivers will probably be enough.

could uninstall old drivers first, under control panel -> programs.
