Actually a MRI machine apparently does a nice job. They used to do it at the hospital where I work, at least that's what I was told. I doubt they'd do that now though, hard enough to get a booking for a patient, let alone hard drives. We have like 200 of them at the hospital that are pending to be destroyed, but with no actual plan. They have a strict policy where retired HDDs are to be destroyed.

While utter destruction is always fun, get the magnets out first (dremels will work for opening up the case). The magnets in HDs are badass strong, they'll hold a really thick calendar to a laminated, textured refrigerator np.

I retired my backup server, and once I code the scripts for the new backup solution and test them, and have a full rotation done, I will want to destroy the old drives, which are IDE and pretty much useless to me, and I don't want to sell them given they've had my personal data written to them.

I need some fun ideas for destruction of them. There are basic things I can do like seperate the platters and hook them up to my dremel and grind them with a sharp object, I can burn them, bend them etc...

But thought I'd ask for other fun things I can do. :awe:

Thermite would be lot of fun, but can't buy that stuff anywhere here. Kinda illegal I would think lol.

lol I plugged mine into my PSU and it did not even spin up, it just did like half a turn every few min.

You can make something that will burn nearly as hot. If you can buy sparklers locally just break off the active area of perhaps 20-30 sparklers into a cup. Sit this cup on top of the HDD. Light one sparkler and touch it in the powder in the cup and stand back! 😉

If you have a power hacksaw you can just cut 'em in half. 😀

once you remove the lid maybe, those metal frames are tough!
still its best to take out the magnets🙂
no point wasting those things.
