I need to get my entire partition from my IDE WD special edition onto my new Maxtor SATA drive. I tired using Maxtor?s max blast but it didn?t go over so well..... The copy took over 3 hours and apparently couldn?t copy a few files so I was unable to boot successfully with Maxtor drive. So I?m guessing it?s the Maxtor software the drive seems fine, so I need another 3rd party solution to get my data onto the new drive, recommendations?

I didnt have a problem using Norton Ghost, I don't know why yours was so slow though for less then 36gig... wait you said maxtor sata? How big was your drive and the amount of data to xfer over? 3 hours is not long for a large amount of files, especially alot of small ones. Small files take a long time because the HD has to write to the directory alot. 1,000 1k files takes soooooooo much longer then a single 1mb file. Don't expect very high transfer rates with a lot of small files, its the big chunks where you see those great transfer rates you hear about in HD benchmarks.

As for the corrupt data, I bet ghost will work.

They are both 80 gig drives with roughly 37 gigs used on the WD, so really I'm only moving 30+ gigs of data. I own ghost and have used it in the past but I didn't think it would be able to see the SATA controller need for the Maxtor SATA drive, or will it?

Otherwise I try the Maxtor software again overnight if I can't find any other solutions...

I have heard of some incompatibilities with Norton Ghost and SATA but I cannot find anything solid. Like some info on their website or some compatibility sheet. What I have heard of seems random or to certain chipsets.

What motherboard and or SATA controller are you using?

I'm using the Aopen AK79D Max with a Promise SATA conroller, not sure on the exact chip.

Right now I'm trying a program called TrueImage wich seems to have all the functionality of Ghost but runs within windows. Hopefully it works but the whole idea dosn't sound possible...

heh I didnt link true image did I? :p
I meant to mention it as a very viable option. People have stated True Image worked better for them with SATA then ghost.

Good luck and run a full check after you are done.

are you running it in windows or booting off the CD?

Also is everything up to date with your chipset? You might want to make sure your chipset drivers/bios drivers are up to date. Also make sure your SATA hardware profiles are all showing up ok. Also turn off any RAID controllers if they aren't in use. This probably isn't the problem in this case but it doesn't hurt to make sure those things are in order.

Also try running the image from the boot disc. Again, I don't know if this will work but it's worth a shot. Have you run some extensive copies from one drive to ther other without ghost or true image? See if copying several gigs of files causes you any errors. Try a large sum of small files and note the time it takes and also large files too like an ISO image.

It wouldn't hurt to start emailing Acronis either.

As far as I can tell TrueImage only runs from within windows, so that?s how I've been using it. With Max Blast I'm running off the floppy, witch failed again over night on the same file.

I'm not sure what the problem with True Image is...

I can make an image fine and transfer it over to the new drive but once the program finishes I get a blue screen. I've done this twice with the exact same results so I'm not sure what to think at this point. I also copied some files over just to test the drive as your suggested, 500+ Megs took about 15 seconds so the drive seems to working.

I think I'll try ghost next and see how that works.

4 and 5 hour images with DataLifeguard tools (WD) is what sent me to Ghost. I don't have SATA, so I can't help with suggestions there, but if it offers any encouragement, Ghost (2003) has done a great job with stuff here (Raid0 on Highpoint, to B/U drive on 'regular' IDE). Takes about 15 minutes for 80GB array with 40GB of data.

Ok, just installed Ghost 2003...

We'll see what happens.

*update*

Ghost worked perfectly, everything appears to be 100%. Just for the record the transfer took 1 hour 20 mins.
