Need to buy my Textbooks

I'm still kind of a noob at buying textbooks. Last semester I decided to wait until school started and get them as I needed to which worked ok, but I feel there's room for improvement. I figure if I buy online I could definitely save a couple bucks. Are there any good websites for getting used textbooks? I've tried half.com and the savings is variable if they even have the correct version.

Are there any other good places for used textbooks, or any tips on how to save money. I get to keep all the money we save under 1000, so the cheaper the better. Last semester I ended up not buying a bunch of books (which it turns out I needed) and studying material off the internet, but it didn't really go as well as planned.

A beer to all the college pros that can help. :)

get to know the class ahead of you. buy from them, and pass down to the people below you.

i used ebay and amazon when that didn't work. on campus stores markup is usually 20% more than amazon.

fleebay, buy the international versions. I bought a brand new book that's $140 on Amazon for $19 on ebay. Same exact book.

I've always used half.com and amazon marketplace. The only problems I've had are with half.com, and they were pretty easily remedied.

And always wait until class starts to find out if you will actually need the book or not.

Look, man, im going to tell you something that you should not know. Befriend a grad student. Then have him/her request a desk copy. I have over $1,000 in free books from grad school. If your new grad student friend likes you...well, you can figure that out.

Alright I started looking on amazon, and it seems pretty good. How long does it take to receive the books though? There's a surprisingly cheap version of some books but it says 3-5 weeks to ship!

Also would you recommend waiting until the semester starts to see whether the book is necessary? It seems like you could save money if a prof says a book isn't required, but I'm kind of leery about the shipping time.

As promised:  !
