I need to build my self a file server. I was thinking get a kt133A board(or maybe a 266A since ddr costs as much as pc133 now) duron around 900, about 256 megs of ram cheap vid card, sb audigy I have layign around, I was hopign for a board with on board LAN. for the HD's I was thinkign buying a 80 and 20 gigger and putting the 20 in my main box and takign the 60 out of my main and put it in the server givin me a total of 140gigs in the server and 20 in my main. All the server has to do is serve files to tghe 3 comps in my house, host a game every once in a while and play divx's and mp3s for the entertainment room. Will this fit the bill, or should I change some things.

hmm, maybe buy the asus nforce board? it's rock stable i own one myself. i would use it for a server too.

that way you save money on the vid/sound. just work on the cpu/ram/hdd.

Well I say that your idea would work. I have a file server setup in my house and, due to past experience, I would recommend that you buy two identical hard drives and run RAID 1. I have had a couple of drive go bad on me and there is no feeling in the world worse than loosing all of your hard earned unreplaceable data. I have the current setup: Dual P3 700s, 512 PC133 Ram, 8gig OS drive, dual 60g data drives (under raid 1), and so forth. I love this set up and being that it is my file server I try to stay as stable as possible. If your file server is just for fun there is no need to run raid. And since you want to use it to play movies and mp3s I would get something over 800mhz.

Just my 2 cents

hmmmm, nforce is lookign like it might be a very good possibility, tell me, is it even possible to game with the onboard vid? Lets say 1024x768/32 with a few visuals on, can you get decent framrates with that?
