Need tips on installing Artic Cooler on my X850XT PE

I would greatly appreciate it guys, as I have not done this before and am scared to death of messing with my video card. Of course I was std of building my PC until I did it, so no real worries there, I just want to be prepared & knowledgable going into it. Thanks.

There's really nothing to it. You remove the 4 retaining screws holding your old heatsink on and prise it off. Next, clean the thermal compound off the GPU and memory chips. Next, apply some thermal compound to the GPU and spread it evenly and thinly. The supplied compound is fine, but Arctic Silver or Ceramique might be a little better. Next put the heat transfer pads onto the 8 memory chips (4 either side of the board) and then afix the Arcthic Silencer, making sure to align the 4 screw holes before pushing down on the GPU. Insert and tighten the 4 screws and finally, there is also a little pressure bar that needs screwed on.

The Arctic Silencer instructions are pretty clear and have color photos from what I remember. No big deal.

Remember: doing this voids the warranty on your video card. 😀

Its better than waiting for them to send a replacement of my card after i send then mine for RMA. I cant afford days & weeks of downtime.

Like Zim said, it's very simple. There are 5 pins that rise up from the cooler's copper plate, and they line up with 5 holes in the PCB. Apply goop and pads, mate card to HS, attach backplate and tensioner just like the instruction sheet shows you, plug in fan, you're all set.

What brand is your card?

It's an Artic Cooling Silncer v5, and I installed it last night but now my card overheats when I play my games for some reason. Any ideas what it could be? I took the old fan off, cleaned the chip of paste with a tissue, applied some Artic Silver 5, slid the card onto the heatsink with the screws lined up, attached the backplate & then the little bridge over that and alternated torquing the nuts & screws down. I can't think what the problem could be for the life of me.

uh oh... I recently installed an NV Silencer 5 as well but aren't experiencing those problems... perhaps you needa reapply thermal compound? I dunno.

Did I forget to screw something down or something? I remember there being 3 nuts & 2 screws used in the process (nuts for the large screws on the bracket & screws for the little bridge)? BTW my case is pretty cramped so could it just be an airflow problem with adding the larger fan into the mix?

sometimes the ati silencer wont make contact with the gpu due to differing thickneses of ram. if that is so, you might have to sand the ram parts down a bit.
