I would like to install a telephone line from my computer room to the phone junction box outside my house. I went to Lowe's and Home Depot, but they did not exactly have all the necessary components I need. Can anybody recommend a reputable telephone supplier on the internet that sell telephone components the average home user install his own phone line? For example, I want to buy quality phone wires, bushings, phone wall outlet, etc. I need to cut a hole in the drywall for the telephone outlet, too, but I already have the equipments to do that.

Home Depot had all the stuff I needed. Did I use crappy parts? I just ran some telephone cable (4 wire) from the main panel inside the house. Drilled up through the floor into the wall and fished the cable out through a newly cut outlet wall. Only parts needed were:

cable - 50 feet = 4 dollars
wall box (kind that anchors behinde the dry wall when you tighten the mounting screws) = 1 dollar
telephone jack plate = 3 dollars

Of course it took me 3 fricking hours before I was sure where to drill through the floor!

vi_edit, thanks for pointing that company out. I have only vaguely, vaguely heard of them before. The closest Graybar store is many miles away, but I'll still drive up eventually. Thanks.

yamahaXS, when you drilled through up through the floor did you make it attractively nice when the wires are entering/leaving the floor? (just curious). So, you didn't have any quality problems with the telephone wires you bought at Home Depot?

I "think" there is something called a bushing that goes into the wall hole and allows the telephones wires to go through the bushing. The bushing is a kind of insulation, too, that prevents too much air and moisture getting into the house. I think you're lucky to have your main panel was inside the house. Mine is outside the house.

I thought about running cat5 wire, but I think the wire guage is the same in both. But no, i figure wire is wire, and I use a thicker gauge than say the wire that runs from the jack to the phone.

Well, i own a ranch style home with basement, so the hole through the floor didn't really matter since I was drilling up into the inside of a wall. You can't see the hole unless you are standing in the basement and looking at the right place. Of couse, if that is the case, then you will be more distracted by the boxes of books and unpacked crap, the 1950's SpeedQueen ringer-washer, the utility sink, the lone and very unprivate toilet, or many of the other items in that portion of hte basement.

Oh, there is a panel outside the house, where the lines connect to the house. Then there is a panel inside the house that serves as a location for splicing all the various telephone lines onto the main line.

For the "bushing" I just used silicon sealant since there is also cable tv and such going through that same hole. Should work fine.
