I recommend getting an Epox or MSI motherboard. Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 40GB is a great drive for $150. And Samsung has great offerings for around $400.

For the CD-RW I'd recommend the TDK VeloCD 12x/10x/32x for $170.

As for a monitor I'd recommend the Samsung 900NF (see my post dated Feb/03/2001 8:57 PM).

I'm not sure when you plan on buying these parts but if you could buy tonight or tomorrow you could use this $50 off $499 coupon from NECXDirect.com

Using that coupon (which expires Sunday 2/4/2001) you could buy the Samsung 900NF plus another $59.05 in miscellaneous stuff (case, speakers, creative labs soundblaster card) - $50 coupon = a pretty hot deal.

If you have purchased your RAM yet you could buy Crucial 256MB PC133 SDRAM for $74.

Samsung 955DF is highly praised here. It's a shadow-mask with a max. resolution of 1600x1200 at 65Hz, but you'll probably want to run at a lower res. Very good bang for your buck. Probably around $350 shipped. KDS AV-195TF is an aperture grille monitor, meaning it will have the two lines across the screen. It will probably run you around $450. People here seem to love them or hate them. I'd go with the 955DF or if you have the money, the 900NF ($450ish).

mrbigglesworth if you're going for high end system then check this out.

CPU: Intel Pentium III/IV
Mobo: Abit, Asus (Abit is know to be real good with Pentium)
Ram: Crucial CAS-2 PC-133
Video Card: ATI Radeon 64 All-In-Wonder
Sound Card: Creative Labs (any live is good)
CDRW: Plextor (with burn proof)
Monitor: NEC FE750/Sony Trinitron
Cases: Antec (File server cases looks nice)
HD: IBM (ATA-100, you can tell the speed between ata-66 and ata-100)

Monitor: (this is the only two company I would buy for monitor, I have NEC FE750 and its a great monitor even seating so close to it for hours but didn't hurt my eyes are anything like that.)

CPU: (I like Intel over T-Bird because I have problem with the t-bird in the past, when you install something your mouse gets real slow as wells as your computer)
