Go with the glock, reliable and a impressive piece of machinery.

How the hell is a handgun going to destroy your shoulder?

I know, I have a Glock 9mm and really wish I had gotten the .40. Don't want the OP to make the same mistake. ;)

Can someone tell me the difference in prices between 9MM and .40 ammunition? I tried to look at wal-mart tonight but the boxes were blocked and no one was around.

I'll just have to see how much more the .40 costs over the 9MM (both the gun and ammo)

Right now I'm heavily leaning towards a XD9MM SC

I feel the most important part of CCW is concealed. You don't want people to ever see the gun, nor do you want to get ticketed or jailed for it accidently showing when you straighten your shirt and people get the wrong idea. The subcompact is a good choice for this reason. In MD I can't get CCW but I would choose a subcompact if I could.

Although if it were me I would go for a .40 S&W. A bit more energy in the bullet.

At the gun shows I have been to (http://www.silveradogunshow.com) I haven't found any really great deals, but what shows give you is a good opportunity to compare prices between dealers very quickly so you can find the best deal.

if you're carrying legally there is no reason for you to be ticketed or jailed. at most you'll be asked to leave the store or if some idiot calls the police you'll have to talk to a police officer for a little bit.

i should rephrase that, i'm thinking of PA law because open carry is legal here. i don't know about other states

Open carry is legal in VA, also. If your shirt comes up and your gun is now visible, aren't you technically open-carrying then?
I would make sure that would never happen, though. I don't really want anyone to know I have a gun.

Usually its about $5-10 more for .40. Again, I'd look around before you take the advise of a glocker and grab the first glock you see (no offense, glocks are nice, but there are nicer guns out there). In the end it's really about what fits your hand best.

if open carry is legal then you have no problems. its only if you try to conceal carry without a license

Head to the range my friend and rent.

Different strokes. What works for some won't work for others. For instance, I recognized the quality of glocks, but their safety trigger and trip don't agree with my fingers and hands at all.

Sig on the other hand seems perfect for me. HK usp's don't fit me well either while P2000's are like gloves.

Also, I wouldn't consider the Sig P239 a subcompact. Its basically the size of the P229 but singlestack. A little heavy and large for me to consider it a subcompact. Aso, with a limit of 500, he definitely won't be looking at new hk's and sigs (unless he gets the polymer sigs).

I'll mention the Glock 26/19, the XD 4" and 3", S&W mp's and Walther P99c's and PPS.

my brother had that one and he, i and 2 of our friends fired it and we all found it terribly uncomfortable

I only saw one other person mention the Smith & Wesson M&P. I have the full size version in .40 and love it. It would fall into your price range as well

Another choice that no one has mentioned that would cost half of what you are willing to spend is the Bersa Thunder .380. It isn't quite as powerful as a 9mm but a good double tap would solve that. It is a small frame, extremely easily concealed and is rediculously cheap. I paid $220 for one brand new and the gun has never jammed on me nor have I had any other problems with it.

If you will be going to the range a lot just to shoot, the 9mm is a good choice. As someone else here mentioned, the ammo is $5-$10 cheaper than for the .40. The ammo for the .380 is roughly the same price as the .40, though I've never understood why!

I currently own a Para-Ordnance .45, a Colt .45 ACP, a S&W model 629, a Beretta Tomcat, and a Glock model 17...along with about 6-7 rifles and shotguns. Glocks are fairly inexpensive, very reliable and as such I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I'd hardly call myself a "glocker" whatever the fuck that means.

If you'd like to discuss the merits of a particular brand with me then ask. I'm not up on all the latest guns but I'd be willing to bet that I've fired more handguns over the years than you have.

I own an S&W M&P Compact 9mm and love it, I wear it whenever I carry. I also have a full-size Springfield 1911A1 mil-spec that I love, but can't conceal carry.

Jules, I guess that came out a bit different than how I read it when I typed it. Again, I'm not against Glocks or their owners by any means. In fact I was considering getting a G26 until I picked up the M&P. I fully agree that Glocks are reasonably priced, reliable as hell, and an all around good gun. I'm just trying to make sure the OP tries out a multitude of weapons before he makes his final decision. No hard feelings

I normally shoot my dad and uncles guns but I'd like to get one of my own for shooting for fun and conceal carry.
I am looking for a compact gun and would like to spend as little as possible for a good quality gun, and hopefully less than $500. I'm thinking I may want to stick with a 9MM also.

right now I'm looking at a Springfield XD 9MM and like it a lot. It may be at or over $500 though.

Any other suggestions? I'm thinking about trading in my Ruger in order to save a bit of money, as I doubt I shoot the ruger quite as much once I get a new gun. It just depends on how much a dealer will give me for it..

Also, there is a gun show at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA this weekend. Are these gun shows normally worth going to? if i go can I expect to find a good deal?

Ding Ding Ding WINNAH!

this compact weapon good for any situation. (well, except an indoor gun range)

WEll i'm going to try to go to 2 different dealers tomorrow and get my hands on as many compact guns as I can.

Right now my main considerations are

Glock 26
XD 9MM SC (probably #1 right now)
Taurus Millenium pro 9MM
S&W M&P compact 9MM

I'll just see what the dealers have to offer.

Glock is the easy choice out of those. As someone who owns a lot of guns, and has carried 24\7 for about 15 years, the Glock is the one with the reliability, the quality, and the reputation. S&W and Taurus semi-autos have horrendous reputations, and IMO the XD is just a Glock knockoff by a company that lacks the name cache that Glock has.

You won't find a more compact deer hunting weapon than This one It conceals quite nicely with a good underarm holster.

No problem. I would definitely advise the OP to try out the guns he is considering as well.
