I currently only have 1 pistol, a Ruger MK II 22/45 which I just shoot for fun.
Text

I normally shoot my dad and uncles guns but I'd like to get one of my own for shooting for fun and conceal carry.
I am looking for a compact gun and would like to spend as little as possible for a good quality gun, and hopefully less than $500. I'm thinking I may want to stick with a 9MM also.

right now I'm looking at a Springfield XD 9MM and like it a lot. It may be at or over $500 though.

Any other suggestions? I'm thinking about trading in my Ruger in order to save a bit of money, as I doubt I shoot the ruger quite as much once I get a new gun. It just depends on how much a dealer will give me for it..

Also, there is a gun show at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA this weekend. Are these gun shows normally worth going to? if i go can I expect to find a good deal?

gun shows can be good, but it depends on what you're looking for.

check out a CZ 2075 RAMI. You can also check out a CZ P-01 too. It's a compact but not too small. I have one and I really like it.
not sure the price on the RAMI but the P-01 is about $475 or so.

You can also check out Glocks and Taurus guns.

I really liked my brother's Glock 23, although I only shot about 5-6 clips through it. It's a compact, .40, and relatively cheap. I would say go to the range and rent some guns included a glock, walther, springfield, and taurus.

I love the Springfield XD subcompact 45. very easy to shoot and nice to carry. I don't think they make a compact 9 or 40, I think those are full sized.

Another one to check out is the Smith M&P. They are very nice. My friend just bought one and I love it. Your best bet is to go to a place with rentals and try a few out and see what you like.

I was able to find a compact 9MM on the springfield site today I think:

That's one of the guns I've been really interested in.

Glocks are pretty fun to shoot, I have shot a glock .40 as well as a 9 mm. Very similar, and i think pretty popular as well.

I also hear good things about SIG handguns.

My co-worker is a huge SIG fan and has been trying to talk me into one of those. What do they offer in compact sizes?

Great gun though. But for a compact, I'd go with a Sig 229, or 220 Carry, or 220 Compact.

Or an H&K USP Compact .45.

EDIT: All of these guns are 50%+ over his price range.

The CZ 2075 RAMI looks like a very nice gun, I'll add that one to my list!

$585 looks to be the lowest price for a compact gun larger than 380 caliber.

Check out the S&W M&P 9c. Just picked one up for myself. Fit my hand much better than the glock did. I've put almost 1k rounds through it now w/o issue. After the rebate ($50, and 2 free mags), I got it for $450.

Edit: I see the resident anti's are already voting your thread down.

Edit Edit: Check this guy out... I know it's not the 9mm, but it's the 40 cal variant of the M&P and he's in Virginia. Good price on it as well.

Only if you're a big guy :p

I'd look fucking ridiculous trying to CC something like a 1911 or other full size (even many of the compacts) autos.

HK P2000SK
Glock G26
Springfield XD

All three come in 9mm, subcompact.
All three use the Glock style polymer frame which makes them light, have less recoil and very rugged.
All three are top of the line brands that will last a lifetime.

Sig makes a bunch as well, but I am not familiar with their models.

Now just go to a large gun shop and hold each one in your hand.
They should all be around $550 out the door. (9mm)

Edit: Do you really want compact, or subcompact? There is very little difference.

The XD-9 is very popular. I got a used Sig P228 for a good price. Love it. I was also interested (and still am) in the FNP-9, which I've seen for under $400 on gunbroker.com.

Used SIGs are obtainable in the $400-500 range, just have to do some looking.

I have the XD 9MM (Service model) and really like the gun. It is comfortable, accurate, well-made and I like the grip safety. You will not go wrong in choosing this gun.

I feel the most important part of CCW is concealed. You don't want people to ever see the gun, nor do you want to get ticketed or jailed for it accidently showing when you straighten your shirt and people get the wrong idea. The subcompact is a good choice for this reason. In MD I can't get CCW but I would choose a subcompact if I could.

Although if it were me I would go for a .40 S&W. A bit more energy in the bullet.

At the gun shows I have been to (http://www.silveradogunshow.com) I haven't found any really great deals, but what shows give you is a good opportunity to compare prices between dealers very quickly so you can find the best deal.

IMO Glock is the best pistol. Extremley well balanced and a 9MM wont destroy yur shoulder like a Colt .45 would.
Go with the glock, reliable and a impressive piece of machinery.

I know, I have a Glock 9mm and really wish I had gotten the .40. Don't want the OP to make the same mistake. ;)
