Need suggestions for a new WLAN router

Hey all

I bought a Dell vostro 1500 last sept, it was packed with the Dell 1490 G receiver so I bought up this little Dlink DWL G730AP wireless router/AP. I thought it'd be great! no antenna, small package, and a case for $50. But alas the thing started dropping connection at least 5 times a day after 3 month and then last janurary it completely stopped working. Windows wireless connection says it can't connect to the router because it has low signal strength... IT'S 4 FEET AWAY!!! I can connect to the crappy linksys wireless from upstairs fine and it's "poor signal strength"

What I want is a no frills operation wireless router, I don't need gigabit ports because I have a DGL 4100, I also don't need wireless N. I had to connect the Dlink G730AP to my computer and go through a drawn out IP set up process, I don't want that. I want a router that I can plug in and go. WEP, WPA, WPA2 security would be a nice thing also.

Any suggestions?

Personally, I would recommend the WRT54GL with DDWRT (third party firmware). flashing one is incredibly easy and whatever you get you should flash it to the newest version anyway, so it's not like there's much extra work involved... as long as you get the L version (WRT54GL vs WRT54G). It comes with all of the encryption protos you spoke of plus many more, and CAN do whatever you want, or CAN just be configged for basics and sat...for years.

As far as my experience goes the Wireless is better with the Zyxel than it is with Linksys, with or without the DD-WRT

*shrug* the wifi on my WRT54GSv3 is incredibly good, but it is an older model that is no longer being sold. perhaps it has somethign to do with the proprietary speedbooster chip being different in some other manner making wifi stronger with it *shrug*.

If you're able to connect to that "crappy linksys router from upstairs", even with the low signal, it would seem that it's not so crappy. Have you considered buying the same?

I actually haven't tried very many linksys routers, I bought one for a customer once and it was one of their cheapo 16 dollar ones. I was impressed with the build quality considering it was a low cost and discontinued model. I've always stuck with Dlink as a rule because I've had my DGL 4100 for 4 years now and it has been a work horse the entire time, I have literally had no connectivity problems with it since I bought it and it has been running almost continuously. In hindsight I should have bought the DGL 4300 instead so I would have the WIFI, but at that time I didn't think I would ever have a laptop so I went with the all LAN model.

I'll have to look into a linksys and the Zyxel

thanks for the suggestions.

The DGL 4300 is nice and has worked wonders for me. It was like night and day between my old WRT54G.

I had a DGL-4300, It did well. But i upgraded to a enterprize level router (Mikrotik Router OS)
But i still use the DGL-4300 as a AP. Still works great. I got a 7DB omni for it and it has good range.

Soon im getting a RB-411 with a 600Mw card in it. On a 15db omni. That im putting on my roof. That comes to about 20 watts of power.

the place i work for does internet. and he have a hotspot at a RV park. It has a 3watt AP on it and i connected to it at 1.25miles away. LOS of course.

Once that happens all wifi in like a quarter mile will be dead in the water. 🙂
