Need suggestions for a good flatpanel... for this summer...

Does anybody have any experience using the SGI 1600SW? I am very tempted to buy one for home use. I'm not much of a gamer, though I would like to watch DVDS on it. My small desk space is also another reason.

Is it worth the 1500$?

Also, are flatpanels easier on the eyes than CRTs?

Yes, I find that LCD's are MUCH easier on the eyes b/c of the fact that the screen isn't constantly redrawing itself (no flicker). I have watched a few DVDs on my laptop and it's flawless. I have heard mixed results about the 1600SW. I have never seen it myself, but you can get better models for the same price. Look at the Samsung 170T and 180T and the Nec LCD1830 just for starters...

I've used the SGI Flat pannel, it's a great monitor, and a great format.

I last purchased one almost two years ago when they first came out. At the time the only graphics card that would work with it was an (of all things) Number 9 something or other. I think that situation has improved, but one slick thing about the number 9/SGI combo was it supported a very high resolution in digital, at the time most digital adapter weres limited to someting like 1024x768 and the SGI did 1900x something or another.

That may have changed by now (I hope so)

LCD prices are dropping like a rocks, as you search through the new lower prices keep in mind that there are flat pannels and there are flat pannels.

Make sure you get a Digital Flat Panel with a Digital Video adapter. If you are using plain old VGA adapter with a flat panel, you are missing most of the fun.

Are there any good flatpanels that have a response rate of less than 40ms..? I want to be able to watch DVDs.. Not the main function of it, but it would be a nice distraction from everything else.

oh yea.. Wizkid: Would you happen to know what the response rate is for the Samsung or NEC models that you suggested? I want to be able to play DVDs on them.

Yes, you can get 25ms (15+10) response time. Look for monitors with a new 17.4" MVA panel from Fujitsu. ViewSonic has a model without digital input; Iiyama has one with DVI-D (+ VGA + S-video) input.

Thanks for the all suggestions.. I'm currently looking into a Samsung 170t. 17", 29ms response rate, .264 pixel pitch.. Any comments or experiences with this one?
