need suggestion on truck rental for relocation

I will travel nearly 2000 miles to move a lot of crap from my previous home to my current home. It will take me 3 days to drive.

I am wondering what truck rental companies are good? I did a quick quote on budget.com, but it requires $860, and it's for a week.

What if I rent a SUV then add a UHAUL trailer? Does this work more economically?

We've used Penske -- trucks seem to be in great shape. Not always the cheapest, though.

Not sure how much it would cost to rent an SUV...try pricing it and compare to a truck?

There is no way a uhaul trailer has as much cargo space as a box truck. Unless you are not moving much, I suggest to rent a small box truck from any company but Uhaul.

I have narrowed down to Penske. After discount it's about $700 for a week with unlimited mileage. The best thing is I have Penske in my storage place, so it's a lot easier for me to pack my stuff.

For Penske discount, I am going to apply for AAA membership. It's 12% off with AAA, so it's well worth the membership fee.

My sister used Penske to move from Atlanta to Jacksonville. Their trucks are not over a certain age (I think 5 years). Very nice trucks and great service.

Try to get a diesel engine for extra torque and better mileage over gasoline. No cruise control, so that will suck...

One time I had to drive a semi over 400 miles with no cruise and I had a bruise on my shin from bumping the dash for 8+ hours.

Most SUV's you rent wont have a trailer hitch. I tried to do this when my wife moved to NJ from Michigan after we got married; the one way truck rental is SUPER expensive as you already know.

I ended up boxing up her crap in 8 boxes from HD, and UPS them all. Put the rest of the stuff in her car and drove back. Cost me about $200 in all for boxes/shipping.

You can get large U-Haul trailers that can handle one bedrooms easy - they have dual axles.

Much depends on how much you are moving. Always get one size larger than recommended - unless you have prior packing experience, you will need they extra space. A furniture dolly and hand truck can be very useful.

Diesel FTW!

When we moved my grandma she rented a U-haul truck that got about 3-4 MPG, so after 600 miles of driving it burned through about 180 gallons of gas. We did the same trip with my aunt in a Ryder that was a diesel, it got 14MPG and was bigger. So only about 50 gallons burned. Also a much better ride, to the point where I was completely comfortable driving it the whole 12 hours.
