Okay , it's update time & I need a couple of suggestions on Hardware .

AMD -------- 2600/2.08
MSI -------- Nforce2 (non intergrated graphics)
Mushkin --- 1x512mb HP 2700

OR

Intel -------- 2.53
MSI ------- 850eMax
Mushkin --- 2x256mb 800mhz rambus (too expensive for 1066 *G* )

I've added the totals of both of these listings from NewEgg .

Intel sys. - $591.
AMD sys. - $647.

Question - Which would give the best performance overall ? Thanks :)

I would go for the nForce2 board and AMD. BUT I would get a lower athlon chip and save you pennys for the Barton. Get a Athlon 1700+ at newegg for less than $70 (Retail) and then overclock it to 2000+ range. Then wait for the Barton chips. Great bang and better upgradable.

Marlin1975's advice is solid but if you're lookin' to build now and since you make no mention of your intention to overclock I would choose the Intel setup myself, BTW with so many asking for opinions on choices today I think you would be best served to add a poll to your thread ;)

I would go for the albatron px845 pev pro ($85 shipped newegg) with the p4 2.4b ($190 shipped newegg) and some winbond or corsair pc3200 (hardcore cooling has the winbond in 512 megs for $149). Total cost about $425. Albatron also has the pro II with serial ata for about $30 more. The albatron combo should do 155-166 fsb with any luck, giving you a nice overclock.
