Thank you for the responses everyone!

A lot of you recommended the Subaru Outback, which makes me glad because it means I'm on the right track. I actually managed to drag my wife to the Subaru dealership over lunch today and she felt better after she actually saw the 2010 model of the Outback (not a lot of those on the streets yet here). I'll try to get an actual quote from the dealership tomorrow. We'll see.

In the meantime she went on to contact the Mazda dealership to get a quote for a brand new 2010 CX-7, and also browsing around we found this pre-owned 2009 CX-9 at 30k miles for ~$24k which seems to be pretty sweet (it is not 'certified' though).

I'm also going to try and look for some of the other suggestions from this thread that I have not looked at and see what I can come up with. We're going to compare everything and go with the best option we get (read: whatever she finally approved :\).

Oh yeah, someone asked about considering minivans, and frankly it would have been my first option if we could find an AWD minivan, 2007 or newer with decent mileage priced around $22k. Brand new would be out of the question because it's going to be up there closer to $30k or even more. We looked around but could not find anything, and noticed that our options are much greater with SUV/CUV and this was how we ended up looking at mostly those. If anyone have specific suggestions on what to look for (make/model/year) I'll gladly look again for these as well.

Equinox is a very nice vehicle, shocking really. They also get ridiculously good fuel economy considering the size.

Probably because the engine is weak as hell for that thing... and it's made in China.

I just bought a 2010 Subaru Impreza hatch. 2 adults plus 2 kids in car seats in the back is a very easy fit. With one car seat, it would be easy to get 2 adults + a kid seat in back, especially since you're shorter. Cargo room is decent. The back doors open out to be perpendicular to the car so it is very easy to get the kids in.

I paid just under $22k, brand new, with premium package and winter package - I have heated seats, side mirrors, and wipers.
