i just purchased a radeon 9800 pro and am looking for the best way to improve performance of the card - which obviously all of you have done

can anyone recommend a cooling solution that is inexpensive and doesn't require me ripping my card apart and taking the chances that i break something?

did that...i guess i just mean minimal

i have heard horror stories where someone tried to rip the factory fan and heatsink off and ended up destroying the gpu - and for a little bit of a performance upgrade i would rather not risk losing 200 bucks

hmm.. took me 20 min from beginning to end (powering down, removing the card, installing the cooler, re-installing the card, powering back up) to install the arctic cooler on my BBA 9800pro.

DAmn, I dont have money to buy 1/2 of any one of these cards....wow lol envyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Nice. Do you find 9700Pro to be better than 5900?

heh.. well, my wife games, so one of those rigs belongs to her.. she's worth the money ;)

on you 9700p quiestion, the simple answer is "no", but that's a difficult question. they both have thier strengths and weaknesses, and being able to run the 5900 @ 450/950 kinda makes matters worse, as overclocking is a YMMV kinda thing - tho many people are achieving higher overclocks than i have.

performance:

for instance, i ran across some ut tests i did on her athlon 3200 awhile back. here are the results using 4xaa 8xaf, at resolutions 800 up to 1600:

9600 Pro 55 41 30 17
FX 5900 (stock speed) 76 58 41 31
FX 5900 (450/950) 81 65 48 37
FX 5900 (475/950)* 82 67 49 39
9700 Pro 76 58 42 32
9800 Pro 86 67 49 36
*experienced a few texture tears

as you can see, the only one that really doesn't belong in this class is the 9600pro (i sold it on ebay for $130.. and got a refurb 9700p from newegg for the same price woot!). at stock speeds, the 5900 and 9700p are almost identical. this is the case with almost all DX8 games - the 5900 is the same or a bit faster. those were taken with a bit older drivers, but they should still be pretty reflective of what to expect from DX8 games overall.

DX9 didn't really matter until FarCry was released, and the tables turn there. the 9700 is about 10% faster overall, but in areas where there are many lighting effects using PS2 shaders, it's more like 30% (tho it the fps still drops 50%, even on the ati cards).

image quality:

call me nuts, but in 2d i prefer the nvidia, especially with the 56.64/56.72 drivers (better color). i also like the game profiles.

in 3d they are comparable, tho i like the color sat of the nv better. the ati aa is a little nicer in certain conditions, but overall they're are pretty comparable - they both do a nice job of aa/af.

anyways, that's a short comparison.. my opinion in the end is it just depends on your budget, and what deals you find on the cards. i really don't think you can go wrong with either one, at least until we see what the next gen offers in terms of price/peformance. newegg had some 97/9800p and 5900xt refurbs yesterday ranged in price from $130-$160. i personally thought the $130 9700p was the best value, but if you have $10-20 more and that's it, the 5900xt would be my choice. if i wanted to spend $160, the 9800p would be the choice.... so overall i would have to give the edge to the ati products on the basis of thier better DX9 implementation, but any one of those cards will work just fine on games available today, and i honestly don't think anyone would be disappointed regardless of which of those 3 cards they had. that's saying something about how good a release the 9700p was - it's almost 2 years old and arguably still one of the best values out there.

CaiNaM thank a lot for providing the benches and shedding some of your opinion about the experiences that you have had with the cards. My last question is do you find more games crashing with ATI drivers or you feel that the problems of the past have been remedied? I have an 8500 and even with the latest drivers I have problems like in far cry the texture glitching and so on, but I do realize it might have been because I was playing the demo which wasn't a finished game yet.

Anyways, thanx for the thorough reply.

my opinion is that ati has come a long ways in the driver department. the catalysts, while an issue here and there, are pretty solid, and with the exception of a problem with CoD (which took several months), any driver bugs seem to be fixed in a timely fashion. overall i think if they aren't on par with nvidia in the driver dept at this point, they're close enough that the quality difference, if any, is negligible.

i was very outspoken about ati's drivers with my radeon and 8500, however i have no problem saying now that ati is just fine in the driver dept these days :)

My MSI 5900FX

5900

Quite a meaty card .... it dwarfs my gf4 4200 and the dual fans (one on each side) means more dustbunnies to blow out eventually ! The heatsink looks like copper, but it isnt, and really adds to the brick-like weight. Yea, an ATI 9800 would be a faster card, but ATI owners have reported many issues with my particular MoBo.

WooT !
