Have a $150 budget (work is paying) to get steel toe shoes/boots that i can wear to site visits that require them. Where can I easily pick up a comfortable pair that will last? What brand should I get?

Actual boots? Redwings are suppose to be really good, though I never had them when I was in construction.

I got a pair of redwings, 8 inches tall? Maybe 6.

Took a month or so to break in, but they've been great since. Bought them May of 2006, probably worn them 50-60% of the days since I bought them, got them on now. Nothing is on the verge of wearing out, they'll last at least a few more years.

Didn't cost 250 when I bought them. Shell Oil Company paid for them (working in a refinery at the time).
 
i got some very stylish (for being work shoes) timberland steel toe boots at sears for $80 that i had my work pay for. i wear them when it's nasty out too.

Most comfortable pair of steel toed shoes I ever wore. I had Redwings, and they didn't hold up very well, IMO. But that's a non-issue for you. You'll only have them on occasionally. The Hytest shoes required no break-in. They look just like regular everyday shoes.

I bought my last pair about 4 or 5 years ago and I don't see them at their site. These are comparable in looks, features and price.

The way I see it, anything that's going to collapse the toe in my boot would have crushed my toes enough to ensure I'd lose them anyway.

The steel toe just cuts them off more cleanly.
 
I'm finicky about the boots I wear.

Red Wings are the CHEAPEST ones I'll put my feet into.

I never liked steel toe boots. Any time it was a requirement of the job, I had them put on the outside of my boots.

Looks funky as hell, but the steel caps can be removed in an emergency much easier than built-in steel toes.

Also, depending on the application, ceramic toes can be worn...IIRC, they meet all the safety-toe requirements.
 
Redwing is one of the brands my business sells. They are overall the best workboot brand we carry. They're only 85% made in the U.S. these days, and the US versions are FAR better in quality than the chinese versions so pay attention to that when you buy.

This is our best selling model. Suggested retail is ~$180, but they can be had for $150 if you don't go to an outlet store.

I also recommend this model because it's waterproof and has a much cushier insole than other models.

If a laceup is more to your liking I recommend this for a 6 inch and this for an 8 inch.

I got some Iron Age boots for $94. Our company only gave us $105. Shrug. You want something that feels ok to wear not crap that you never wanna wear. A lot of people got boots that they dont like and dont even bother to wear at work whereas a few of us got the good ones.
 
I had some Dr. Martins that were uncomfortable as hell, so stay away from them.

Some of my colleagues had work shoes by Skecher and I was told they were pretty comfy.
 
Redwings seem to be the popular choice here. Hopefully I can find a retailer. I need them by next Tuesday.

Yeah I got it. There's a whole bunch of stores in my area. Thanks! God, it's going to be raining next week. I wish I had my snowboard jacket with me....better get some work pants too.
 
I too have had good luck with redwings and Doc Martens, but I really liked the Timberlands I got last time I bought some.
