http://www.anandtech.com/show/5508/intel-ssd-520-review-cherryville-brings-reliability-to-sandforce shows that the Intel firemware for the controller is different from other sandforce's and they DO invest in improving it. I'm not saying its as good as others.
Either way I went with a 256GB Samsung and have been very pleased with it.

Did the Maple Crest (330) line get the same extensive validation as Cherryville?

According to this http://www.anandtech.com/show/5817/the-intel-ssd-330-review-60gb-120gb-180gb its not so much validation as they didn't have access to the source code, but more like a complete rewrite, and why Intel drives don't perform the same way as other SandForce based drives.

I have seen the 256 M4's and even the Samsung in the $180 range lately. Just put them in your amazon shopping cart and play the waiting game.

Just yesterday I received my two 128 GB Plextor M3S's that I bought from Circuit City for $75 each.
