Need speakers

Have a receiver, need speakers now for a 7.1 set (not 5.1).

I would get RM6750 + 6751, but I don't know how well they work for close-listening (2-3').

Any suggestions?

Those Polk RM6750's are a great beginner set. I had the same set, then upgraded my Left/Right fronts to Monitor 60's and the center to a CS1. I still use the sub since it's pretty good considering. If I recall correctly Newegg has a sale on them as we speak:

$30 off promo code: EMCKFKE65

I'd at least get these for a 5.1 setup. You cannot beat $169 + free shipping!!!

Smoove, that doesn't answer my issue of whether they work well at 2-3'. My yamaha sound bad that close up.

Onita, I need suggestions for fairly inexpensive speakers (i.e. rm6750) that work well for close listening.

7.1 plus 2-3 foot listening distance = huh?

If you want good nearfield reproduction then pick up some pro-audio monitors. Is this for a PC setup on a desk?

My listening distance was probably between 3' to 10' away. I was happy with them, but that is all in the ear of the beholder.

man my ancient sony htib still rocks from 7 years ago. 5.1 glory. The speakers are cheap at i do sit at 3-5feet form the LG60" and fronts- love it - i have found that the source media is what counts. you could have had billion dollar speakers but if you didn't have digital masters and were watching a dvd - that blu-ray on my old ass cheap sony htib would sound far superior. it makes me wonder with all this power built into the cpu if its not time for pure digital speakers (bidirectional) that are wireless. they could be content aware self-tuning continually. maybe use the kinect to beam the sound to the audience. then you could have cheaper speakers that are host based processed and cheap i said cheap. bose is the master of taking junk and making it sound good static(physically) why not use a core or some cuda up and have that dynamic? you want to stand face up to the tv because you feel like it? that's great - it will adjust

Some of mine will be closer than 3. 🙁

Well anything we tell you will not appease you until you actually demo them yourself. Your best bet then would be to go somewhere and listen in person. That way you can sit 1 ft or 10 ft from them and see how they fair. I don't really understand the purpose of sitting 3ft from a bigscreen, but whatever floats yer boat.

Good luck!

He's not in front of a big screen, he's at a computer desk in a small room and is determined to go close range 7.1, logic be damned.

Most cheaper HT speakers are not designed for near field listening since they assume most people won't be that close to the TV. Smaller HT speakers will probably sound better close range than larger ones. Pro-monitors are specifically designed for near field stereo but they cost more.

I don't see a budget listed anywhere in this thread. However based on the setup you are currently looking at it seems to be in the $250 range for the entire setup.

In that range I'd probably get this($118 shipped): http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-680 , another pair of these($39+shipping): http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-670 , then I would spend extra and get this sub($148 shipped): http://www.amazon.com/BIC-V1020-Dow...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1302361720&sr=1-1

If you can't swing the $148 you could go with the smaller 8" version($97 shipped): http://www.amazon.com/BIC-AMERICA-V-.../dp/B00009WBYK but if it were me I'd spend the extra for the 10". That said both subs will kick the crap out of that Polk one.

Over all I think this setup will sound better than the Polk but in the end your opinion matters, not mine.

Be careful about 7.1 in a small area. You can actually create some pretty nasty surround muddiness with your middles and rears if too close together. Unless your fronts and rears are further than about 12-15 feet, you would be better off with 5.1. Also keep in mind your rears will need to be at least 3-5 feet behind you. If your couch is againt a wall, stick with 5.1. Besides...not much is even recorded in 7.1.

uh dude if you're listening within 3 feet a single pair of good monitors should blow the shit out of any surround setup at the same price in terms of both SQ and imaging.

Pioneer's new line is getting stellar reviews, and they are inexpensive. You could start with a 5.1 setup and build out to a 7.1 if you still feel the need for more speakers.
