Blizzard is my favorite company. I've played all their games for way more than I care to admit starting with WC1.

D2 is my favorite game ever. I haven't played it for a couple years now because I can't deal with the graphics anymore, I keep hoping for a D3 release date (which will make D2 obsolete), and the hacking/auto farming was just making the game boring. Here's to hoping Blizzard can keep D3 legit (I'm sure they can, as they managed to really crack down on the bots in WoW).

Anyway, for a while I played Titan Quest: Immortal Throne, which is basically D2 (if you run the Xmax mod anyway) but with way better graphics. Unfortunately it's no longer a supported game, the multiplayer isn't robust and it's not based around that like D2 is, and because the company shut down shortly after release it's not balanced, even with the fan patch. In other words, there are several game-breaking mechanics which are relatively easy to achieve and exploit, essentially making you invulnerable and making it super easy even with a mod for maximum monster/boss spawns. But really it's the lack of a multiplayer economy so there's really no reason to keep playing once you beat it all and get a bit of gear.

I'm really hoping for a D3 release this year, but until then is there any kind of D2-ish game out there that's worth playing for a bit?

If no multiplayer isn't a deal-breaker, torchlight is pretty much a diablo clone with more cartoonish chars.

I heard Sacred doesn't work with Windows 7? And I'm considering going back to D2, if I can stomach it. Is the ladder reset yet?

And I looked into Torchlight, it looks too cartoony for me.

Well, It's like Diablo Casual, or Diablo Lite, which made it one of the most mind numbing gaming experiences I've ever had. Grindiest grind ever, IMO.

Mount and Blade:Warband is on sale on D2D. It's a great game. You should definitely try the demo (it's the full game but you can't level past level 7, which takes a couple of hours to get to) and buy if you like it. Nothing to lose.

Get the original Sacred, not Sacred 2, the first one is better. Also I recommend Torchlight. If not just wait for Torchlight 2, it'll have multi-player as well.

Another burnt out D2 addict, and I cast my vote for the original Sacred (get Sacred Gold, includes the Underworld expansion). You can find it dirt cheap and it runs under Win 7. Essentially no multiplayer because the company went bankrupt. I haven't tried Sacred 2, because of the Win 7 problems and I hear it's securom limits you to two installs-not a good thing when the company is bust. But if you want Sacred 2, the Hot Deals section has a bundle with another game for $12.49:

Fable is also another low budget D2 clone. For some reason I played this a lot more than Torchlight, but they are pretty similar.

Try Divinity II, The Dragon Knight Saga. I am on my third playthrough as a ranger, and have finished as a magic and a melee character.

The game leans a little more to questing instead of just hack and slash, but it has a classless skill tree and decent gameplay. Be sure to get the Dragon Knight Saga game which includes the original game and the Flames of Vengeance expansion. You will hate the ending unless you get the expansion, which the game automatically goes into after you finish the original game.

You can get the game on Steam.

Mount and Blade would have been cool in like 1995! Calling it a game is a stretch. It's more like a clunky high school programming project with bad graphics.

I played the Torchlight demo and couldn't bear it. Even the cartoony part isn't that bad (though it's funny how it's EXACTLY a D2 clone, down to the ID scrolls), but two things were deal breakers for me:

1) How the entire screen shook almost every time you whacked an enemy with no way to turn off this "feature".

2) The UI is way oversized and you can't shrink it and it doesn't get any smaller with a higher resolution. This is like a game for visually impaired people. It's way too clunky.

Sigh, I should just go back to D2.

Are there any good SC2 RPG maps out there?

I tried Sacred 2 and man, it just feels so crappy.

I would have to agree. I really wanted to play this game, but was very disappointed after I did. It just seemed really cheap somehow, couldnt get a good view with the camera, seemed like a much older game than it really was. Cant really say why I didnt like it, but the game just seemed "off" somehow or missing something.

Maybe I will go back to the game eventually and try it again.

So, I'm downloading D2/LOD again ... I don't know what it is about Blizzard games, but no one seems to be able to compare in those genres. It's Hammer time ...

Gameplay > Graphics

I said Warband not original M&B. Warband's graphics is not bad at all.

You sound like you never played the game at all.

Keep an eye out for the Dark Spore open beta next month. The multiplayer is ok and will keep you entertained for a while if you like the genre.

Tried playing D2 again and I can't do it ... the graphics aren't even that bad but the lack of a higher resolution support is undoable. 800x600 on a 24" wide screen looks horrible. Looks like I'll have to tough it out on SC2 custom maps.

You can google Median XL, an unofficial mod for Diablo II. It's very well done and gives D2 a refreshingly new experience.
