I need to pick up a socket 775 CPU for my 965P-S3 this week, just to hold me over until the C2D price cuts. What's the cheapest, decent price/performance ratio chip for me? I was looking at the Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield. How's that, or is there something better?

What model C2D are you buying when the cuts come around? Are you looking at saving more than the cost of this proc?

If you're looking @ reselling this proc when you get your C2D, you might want to consider that once the C2D cuts are here that your resale price of this chip will also drop.

This is a decent proc - I'm just not sure I see how it would be a good invesetment for the short period of time you're looking @ using it.

Picking up the cheapest used 775 CPU you can find is probably the best idea. Hit the FS\FT forum and scavenge for a bargain.

The Pentium 805 is really not very fast. It's dual core, but overall very mediocre and runs pretty hot, and is way inferior to the Presler which costs $25 more (but also inlcudes a heatsink). So if you need a HSF for this, then the Presler is the better deal - faster speed, double the cache, runs cooler, and 65 nm technology. I would wait 5 more days though...

Well I borrowed a little extra cash and picked up an E4300. How much lower than $139 can they go anyway (in the nearterm).

Yeah so after the vendor applies their markup, there's no way it can be that much less than what I paid yesterday.

It depends on how long it takes to normalize, but when the price drop actually comes into effect it will probably go as low as $120.
