Take the dog outside every 2 hours or so, pick a command to tell them, and stay out until they poop or pee.

Not only will it house train your dog, but it will teach it to go to relieve itself on command. Which is good for cold nights and taking the dog places.

I used to raise guide dogs, and this is how they taught us to train the puppies. Now I have 3 dogs that can pee on command.

We did this to our Heinz 57 pup. The wife was really good about taking her out quite often. We would tell her before we take her out "go pee" and while she was out there we would say "go finish". She picked it up within a few days. And never has an accident in the house unless it's our fault.
Now when's she outside I'll say "go finish" and regardless if she has anything left to push out, she'll go in the yard squat a sec or 2 and come bounding back.
It takes dedication and consistency, but you are rewarded with a wonderful pet.
Give them frequent opportunities to do right and praise the heck out of them when they do. It has worked for the last 6 dogs we have raised. I never scolded my rottwieler, but the time he was sick and had to go in the house he was soo ashamed. We locked him in a bathroom and he used the tub, what an easy cleanup:)

He is at the groomers right now getting his first good wash and clip. I kept him in my room with me all night last night. We woke up and I immediately took him outside but no go. We went back in and I caught him peeing and told him no and immediately took him outside. He found a little spot and peed again. Hopefully it's a start. I fed him a little when he woke up. I need to watch the training DVD the shelter gave me. I'm just trying to read up on everything cus he is a great dog and it's just me that needs the training.

Also any tips on how to introduce my existing cat to the dog? The cat has just been hiding since the dog has shown up. Should I just give it time or should I force something? They saw each other yesterday but of course the cat just hissed and ran.

Once you crate train the dog, you can have the dog in the crate and then bring the cats out to check him out. They won't feel as threatened this way, and since they are smaller and he is a puppy he probably won't feel threatened either. Do this only once he feels like the crate is his home though and feels safe in there.

Otherwise I wouldn't force anything for the moment. Just work on a few basic things so you don't overdo it. I'd say first in the order of buisness is crate training and house training.

Does crate training have to be literally a box for him to stay in or can it be a fenced off area just for him like a corner?

It has to be a dog crate, so he can't get away from the poop/pee. Remember you have to be there every couple of hours till he learns the routine. Also, a pup's bladder is not going to last much longer than that at first.

I had a bichon which is notorious for house training. Crate training and consistency is the key. And plenty of patience. If you catch him in the middle of an accident, make sure you let him know loudly that you don't like that. Reward him when he relieves outside. Sooner or later he'll learn to signal at the door (sit, scratch the door, etc) when he needs to go outside.

Most of the time crate works better. However, I just found out with my puppy that he has whole sections of the house where he wont' go to the bathroom. The kitchen, where he eats, and my room, where he sleeps. I am a heavy sleeper and one time I know it must have taken him an hour to wake me up, but he still didn't go in my room.

However, most of the time a crate is best. And you have to remember to take him out frequently. I'd say my puppy had to go every two hours or so in the beginning (yes, I was waking up throughout the night). A week later it was up to about 3 or 4. Now he can go about 6 hours during the night (yay I'm finally getting some decent sleep! :p), and I take him out about every 3 hours during the day.

Are you crate training him?

I'm looking this up right now. Never head of this before. Looks interesting. Guess I need to either make him something or buy him something.

crate train + leaving out of crate for small periods of time (preferably supervised) in a closed of area near exit door that has pads (if non carpeted the best) is how I've done it.
