Need some temp info on a Gigabyte MB that's running SETI

My good friend has gotten a Gigabyte GA 7VTXH with 1800+ XP, 256 2100 DDR memory, and seems to be having very CPU high temps. He has been running 48C - 60C and he has not been OCing. Isn't that too hot? He has tried Sysopt for help and didn't seem to get much there.

I'd appreciate a quick reply to this.

He has ordered an Antex SX840 and a Volcano 6+ cooler which should help his temps out a ton IMHO. We really would like to hear what temps he should be getting. MBM does not support that motherboard and his temps are being reported by his System Information Viewer that came with the motherboard.
 
I have a GA-7DX running an overclocked 1800+ that never goes below 55C and I haven't had any problems. I'm afraid that is all the info I have for you though.😱 I think the Athlons can run hotter than Pentiums.
 
Looked over at amdmb.com and there were only a few posts on this board and temps, with very different results. It sounds high, but temp readings are notoriously difficult to compare.

It looks like MBM should work with this board, at least on the temp side. Check This Thread..

I guess I'd try the usual stuff, make sure the heat sink is seated correctly, fan RPM is healthy, and remove the case to eliminate poor ventilation as a problem. I'm not familiar with that particular board, but I assume it has the temp probe in the middle of the socket? If angled up to the point it is touching the underside of the core, high temps should be expected. Baldy's temps seem in the same ballpark, maybe they just read high (Asus had this issue with 133A's as I recall). If it is not locking up. I wouldn't worry a lot that something bad will happen until the new stuff arrives.
 
dont know about the m/b...but if and when you get the volcano 6 ,..i would lap it...both of mine came with a rough bottom "insert."......you could feel the rings with a finger nail ..thats how course they are....
 
Well since motherboard temps are always incorrect it is hard to say. Do not rely on what motherboard software tells you, it's wrong. That's the good news, the bad news is that it will normally report LOWER than actual temps! That's the bad news. The best thing you can do to lower temps is to get good airflow in the case. Intake fans and exhaust fans. The new HS will do a better job but will be noisy, should have gone with the Alpha. Also make sure to use some ASII and not that pink gum that is on the bottom of those stock HS's, to me the really act as an insulator.

I have sort of scared him when I told him his temps were way too high. He has only been running it during the evening and shutting it off during the day because the temps were getting into the 60C+ range. I have a 1900+ and a 1800+, both OC by 10MHz FSB, that stay right at 45C all the time running SETI and other apps. He may be doing a little overkill but getting the Antec SX-840 and the Volcano 6+ with that 7200 rpm fan is definitely going to cool that baby down. (Or I'm going to look and feel real bad) :Q


panhead49, I've got a Volcano 6+ with the 7200 rpm fan that is going to go into a new 1800+ rig this weekend. I just took it out of the box and I see what you mean. There are some definite circles from the polishing of the copper that I can feel with my fingers and really feel it with my fingernail. What do you use to "lap it" - I assume that means smooth it out?
 
Here are the current temps on my Gigabyte GA-7VTXE 🙂 It is identical to your friends, except I don't think mine has an onboard LAN Adapter. Also - look on the install CD - mine had a temp monitor that pulled the correct temps 🙂 Look below VV for MBM5 settings. Anyways its running a XP 1700+ non OC'd - 512 2100 DDR Ram

Sensor 1 = CPU Temp = 40C ; Average=39C - in MBM5 this sensor should be Sis950ITE8705F-1
Sensor 2 = Case Temp = 54C ; Average 52C - in MBM5 this sensor should be Sis950ITE8705F-2

Never had a problem - SHDN will initate if the case gets up to 58 C - but my CPU stays pretty cool. BTW, I have some Volcano (can't remember; will look later) fan, my local comp shop recommended it 🙂

Edit 2 : During the winter my house remains @ 68F during the day and 61F @ night. Not sure if that would make that big of a difference; but it can't hurt to lower the house temp 🙂
 
All I can suggest is Cooler Master HHC-001, its my favorite HS/F and worked better for me than a ThermalRite SK6 + YSTech 7,200RPM HS/F combo with much less noise. 😉

Lapping--I use three grades of aluminum oxide wet/dry paper--400, then 800 and finish with 1500. I use a glass table, tape the paper to it, and move the HS is a figure 8 with very little pressure--let the sandpaper do the job. I use water to lubricate and clean the bottom occasionally. It takes about 1/2 hour--very monotonous but you should end up with a mirror like finish after the 1500 grit.
 
JimMc, Have you been able to verify a performance improvement after taking those steps? It almost seems they left them the way they are for a reason. Is it possible that these small groves would give the AI something to grip and also be a slight increase in surface area? I can see that the direct contact would not be as good as a perfectly smooth surface but it does make one wonder.

What Jim MC said, but I finish it off with 2000 grit wet.

I have the same motherboard, and an Athlon XP 1700+. It runs at 59 deg. C when not overclocked - using a Zalman 'Flower' Cooler with the fan on 'Silent' mode.

Nothing to worry about, as long as the temps. dont fluctuate much...

Hey, Greg you better go to an Auto Parts store for the sandpaper , and any piece of glass will do fine,
even an old broken piece as long as it's big enough ( 4X6 inches )!! 😛

The Athlons are safe up to 90 C by the way! 🙂🙂🙂

My XP1800+ (2) with FSB o/c to 145 never got over 45C with that bad boy mounted on top.
 
I'd say lapping is good for a couple of degrees, but there is no way an individual can accurately measure it. If you're in a hurry, just hold it up against your bench grinder for 15 seconds or so. And don't forget to grind down the core also to ensure good contact. 😉

Best indication I had that lapping worked was a celery 366, couldn't get Windows to run stable, games crashed in a minute or so; lapped the HS/F and CPU (not a flip chip, obviously) and it ran stable at 2.3 v. I have never lapped a flip chip, but I've been tempted when looking at the concave shape of some. I just don't how much can safely be removed before you trash the core.
 
My .02 worth:
Suspect that Gigabytes temp monitoring software is suspect- Mine runs 54-58 (crunching)- Highes I've seen was 63
BTW- in the Bios it reads as 44-48 - Ten degrees cooler

I may have advised my buddy to buy a case and cooler he didn't actually need but he will be better off with them. His soon to be old case and cooler could be used on another system. 😱
