I have Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos on my truck. They'd probably compare poorly against a dedicated snow tire but I've been pretty happy with their performance year-round (hasn't snowed more than a couple inches since I bought them 18 months ago so I can't comment on how well they handle deep snow). Nice thing is I don't have to have winter tires taking up space in the garage during the summer :)

Edit: Nevermind. I assumed you were looking at truck tires. Didn't realize the WS-50 was a car tire :)

Those prices are based on what? I couldn't find a single place that had Blizzak's for my car under $100 each.

I got a pair of Winterforce and had 'em studded for my wife's Grand Marquis. She's THRILLED! If I had it to do over, I'd get four of those studded, mounted on winter rims, and drive around like a 4WD Jeep! As it is, I doubt there's a better bang for the buck out there.

I'm assuming ur talking about the hakkapelitta 2 ? and i'm assuming thats better than the nordman 1 they got ?

You are correct, I am talking about the Hakkapelitta. They are a true snow tire and work awesome in ice and deep snow. They are also reasonably good in the dry as well. But most importnatly, they have long tread life. I'm using my set of Hakka 1s for the past three seasons so far. I can't comment on the Hakka2's as I haven't used those.

I just got a set of the viking snowtech's for my mazda 3 and so far loving them. haven't had any major snow since i put them on, but they are actually quieter on the highway than the goodyears that were oem and they were almost $40 cheaper per tire for my car.
I was debating the blizzaks or them, and since the only report comparing them was the CR one, I couldn't see any reason to spend ~$120/tire when i could get as good for $83 and the only reason not to was the namebrand.

A friend of mine has Hak 2's... but I can only find RSi's locally. Any major difference? I won't be studding them.

I have these now.. but a lot of review site said the design is old and the newer stuff is much better..

I'm only shopping because, my current ws-50 is near end of life.. probably last winter (had since 2000). I hit a nail 2 nights ago and got it plugged up.. so it's still good.. I figure I can monitor prices and order when or if it gets lower towards spring (good idea ?)
prepping for next winter

I have Nokians on my IS right now. They're good in the snow, but not too great in the ice IMO.

Overall they're good tires for the winter.

Indian Studded tires are only illegal in Ontario for some very dumb reasons
I stud my winter tires since 98 and wouldn't consider anything else for winter driving
Studs da best!
more

The designer of a winter tire is faced with major hurdles to overcome. First, the tire must operate successfully over a very wide temperature range in winter (-40°F to + 50°F or more). It must also provide adequate friction on every surface, including wet and dry pavement, ice (wet and dry), slush, deep powder snow, thick wet snow, and various combinations of all of these. If the surface was always icy with some moisture, then a soft and sticky rubber compound combined with a tread design with relatively small grooves for maximum rubber surface area and very large numbers of sipes in the tread blocks would be fine (the so called "ice radial").
However, on roads covered with ice and deep slush, the smaller grooves would not be able to drain the slush out of the contact patch fast enough at high speeds and the tires would hydroplane. In deep snow, large grooves trap and compress the snow (like a very hard snow ball) and much of the grip is provided by the shear forces developed in the tightly compressed snow. So the "ice radial" will not perform so well in these conditions.
Similarly, a block type tread that provides superior grip in deep snow and slush will not have as much rubber and so many sipes in contact with sheet ice, and thus will not perform as well on icy roads or hard packed snow.
The Role of Studs
So where does that leave tire studs? The answer is simple: studs are there to provide additional grip on ice and hard packed snow that becomes like ice. If you rarely if ever drive on ice, then you do not need studs. However, because studs provide extra friction by biting into icy surfaces, the tread design can be slanted more toward optimizing performance in deep slush and snow.
Similarly, because some of the grip on icy conditions is taken care of by the studs, the rubber compound can be made harder to provide significantly longer tread life. In other words, by using studs, the designer can produce a tire that can cope with a wider range of driving conditions, such as ice, slush, and deep or hard packed snow, and still provide longer tread life as an added bonus

The Blizzaks are arguably the best 'unstudded' snow tires on the market. I personally use Dunlop wintersport M3 tires on 17" wheels on my R32 and they're fine.

I have Firestone Winterforces on my Z24. They work real well. Couple of weeks ago when we had 7" of snow i had no problem getting out of my driveway which is long.

I have Cooper Weathermaster ST/2's... they work fantastic... reasonable price and excellent grip. Ride comfort/noise is perfectly fine too.

I like them.

I think the RSi's are have a bit more trade-off towards performance and less noise.

The Hak's are more geared towards inclement weather, snow, ice, extreme cold temps, etc.. but keep in mind that they are noisy on the highway..atleast my Hakka1's are.

That's the only caveat with them.
