Need some recommendations: New York City Hotels...

Hi all,

My parents are planning on a trip to NYC from May 16th (check-in) to May 19th (check-out) and I need hotel recommendations for them. Budget of about $500/night (give or take $50).

Also, how much does it cost to take the cab for about 5 blocks? Or do they even take you in for 5 blocks? I remember in Vienna, the taxi driver yelled at me for asking him to take me to my hotel that was about a mile away.

The hotel must be in a convenient spot (closer to all the main attractions, better: times square, statue of liberty, 5th avenue stores, maybe a couple museums, etc.)

Any help will be apprecited, thanks...

Update:

Ok, finalized the hotel reservation today.

The Sofitel was booked completely, but the Waldorf Astoria has what they wanted.

$599/night but I have been reading great things about this hotel so its alright.

Try the Essex House on Central Park South. One of my hangouts, although I never actually paid for a room myself, so I'm not sure how much it costs. I love the place.

my parents usually stay at the omni berkshire when they're in town.

it's about a block away from 5th avenue, and it's right near the shows.

i wouldn't suggest taking a cab for 5 blocks simply because you can walk it (numbered blocks/streets are really short blocks -- 1/4 of a mile. if you're doing avenues, then a cab might be recommended). during rush hour, it's really hard to get a cab in midtown nyc.

I don't think you will find a hotel close to the Statue of Liberty.

But for $500/night you can get practically any room in the city.

Yeah, I have never been to NYC, so I was just guesstimatting :)

How will they get to the Statue of Liberty from midtown? Metro? How much will it cost to take the cab? Can they get on top? I heard that they closed it after Sept. 11, did they reopen it?

Any other sites that you recommend?

They don't want to go to any Broadway shows, but everything else, they'll consider.

The Doubletree at Times Square had a used sex toy and lotion container under the bed and window washers that appeared suddenly while we were in bed. The neon lights were pretty bad, even with the drapes, so check that one off unless your parents are really kinky :p

$500 a night will give you many choices. Most all hotels in manhattan have a person at the front desk who is very knowlegable with tourist related questions, thus you can ask them all the questions when you check in.

What sort of quality and perks do they expect besides location for 500 a night?!!@?

You can stay anywhere, Sofitel is pretty good but 4 Seasons pretty much is the top place.
To answer your questions, to get to the Statue of Liberty from Times Square, you can either take the 1 train to South Ferry, then walk to Battery Park (where you catch the ferry) or take the NRW to Whitehall St. then do the same thing.
A cab from midtown to battery park can range anywhere from I would say 20-40 dollars depending on traffic. In the morning, going downtown can be hellacious, but after about 10 AM it won't be that bad. If you're past rush hour I recommend just taking Broadway all the way to Battery Park. Whether or not you can get to the top I'm not entirely sure of.
Make sure they go to the Central Park and some Museums - they'll be really nice this time of year.

actually, the hotel i suggested earlier goes for $699/night :shocked: (yes, it's a REALLY great hotel)

i think they can take a cab to the statue of liberty, and i believe it's open once again. if you don't go to the statue of liberty, at least go to liberty state park in jersey city, NJ. it's beautiful and you get really nice views of the statue from there.

I'm visiting in July, my friend wants to stay at the 60 Thompson for her bday gift...it might be a little trendy for your parents' tastes, but I have a list that I've gotten through various travel sites along with priceline/biddingfortravel.com

Good luck! $500 is pleeeeeeeenty.

I'm going to New York soon, had a thread about where to eat.

i'm staying at Waldorf Astoria, it is in midtown, you can get to pretty much anywhere from there.

it's $259/night for my stay. (company paid)

HOly crap! put them up somewhere cleaper and buy a GF6800. $500/night is INSANE unless they're loaded

^ The Waldorf is AWESOME and highly recommended. Very near everything, and $259/night actually isn't bad for that place
