Need some reassurance on this OCZ 700w PSU choice

well from the few ripple posts i have seen..linking to reviews..

it seems the standard is 50 mV on the 3.3/5 lines but 120mV on the 12 --or is this ancient history now?

Thats correct. Jonnygurus review showed very high ripple on the 5V and 12V rails for the OCZ 700W.

well, after a bit more reading, the teapo seems to be a fine cap now.

Of course i am only basing this on the one comment in this thread that said the OCZ one uses teapo.

Sorry to be a thread digger, but I just came across this thread and it contained some excellent info, especially since I own an FSP Epsilon 600W. I still think it's a good PSU, but perhaps not as good as I previously thought it to be. But heck, it's much cheaper than comparable 600W PSUs, so I guess I got what I paid for.

Anyway, I'd like to ask what's the difference between a load tester and a low draw system? I have some basic knowledge of electronics and I've used o-scopes and logic analyzers before, but I've never tested PSUs so forgive my noob questions. Why does it take a load tester to test ripple at the load, and does the PWM smooth out the voltage and get rid(or reduce) the ripple?

Also, jonnyguru, did you ever contact OCZ or FSP to report your findings and for them to possibly address the problems?

I am personally recommending the 700w OCZ GameXStream because I've SEEN (In person!) it running an x1900xtx/x6800 system with drives in RAID, etc. with NO voltage fluctuation. I know it works.

You say you know your stuff....

Hey Antec used to be good And Thermaltake's new Toughpower was given a 9/10 by JonnyGuru. There are always exceptions to the rule(unless you get like a raidmax or something)

Actually, many Raidmax power supplies sold separately are made by Topower or ATNG. Typially it's the PSU bundled with the cases that are made by Powmax or Deer (or neither or both, but always about the same quality) that can burn your house down.

So yes... there ARE always exceptions to the rule.

No it's not, but I forgive you for being 16. Let's take for example a popular build:

C2D E6600
whatever mobo
2x1gb ddr2-xxx memory
2 7900GTX (as per your statement)
1 dvd drive
2 hard drives
1 sound card
2 fans

TDP for the E6600 is 65W so that's about 5.5A. 2-3A for the mobo. Memory doesn't use +12V. 7900GTX uses around 7A so that's about 14 there. DVD drive = ~1A, HDs are ~0.5A, sound card is fairly low-consumption but let's say 0.5A, and 2 fans = ~0.5A.

That's 25A. A lot of good 400W supplies supply more than that.
