Need some quick thunderbird help

Hey guys, my pc froze up on a BSOD and when I rebooted my pc, thunderbird is now asking me to create a new account. Will this erase my existing emails and contacts or will it synch back w/ everything? I tried using a restore point to see if this would help, but no go. I'd appreciate some help if you can. Thanks.

Did you check the setting where it says "Keep copy of message on the server?"? With POP3, you normally download only the "new messages" and store them on your computer(messages get deleted on the Server). Could be that this local storage file got corrupted and now is useless -> all messages gone. But if you saved also all messages on the Server, you just fill in your account details again, and download all messages.

Well, it appears that my local storage file is on the system, but I don't know how to tell how it's corrupt. I was forced to create a new account, but now it's as if I started from scratch. I changed the settings to point at my old files, but it's not working. How could I download all messages? This is really frustrating. I can't imagine losing all my emails and contacts from the last year. Any ideas?

Nevermind guys...what I did actually fixed it. I had to close the program and go back in and it worked. Thank goodness!! At least now I know what to do if this happens next time.

How did you go "back" to fix it? I would check the "Leave copy of messages on Server" settings, so you have a little "backup" of all your messages.

Umm, great idea ... until his inbox fills up !!!! You only have so much space on the remote email server, 5 or 10 mb, so this doesn't help in about a month. I'm surprised no one has suggested a simple utility to back up the Mozilla Thunderbird emails.

Mozbackup

Next time around, just keep a back up of your profile folder. That's where all your emails are stored along with your settings. It's located in /documents & settings/YOUR USER ACCOUNT/application data/Thunderbird.
