I'm in the process of reinstalling Windows on my PC. I've done fdisk and then went back and tried to run setup. It said setup could not be run in DOS. How can I get around this so I install Win2K? Please help!

Use your Windows CD on another computer to create the boot disks...I think it takes 4 disks total. It's pretty straight forward after that.

Huh?

I just booted from floppy and did fdisk.

Then I tried to boot from CD (with Win2K in), but it said it's not a vaild system disk or whatever. "please enter a system disk and press enter". That's what I got.

Its simplest when you are installing win2000 or nt4 to just boot from the cd.. go to bios and set boot sequence to start with the cdrom and have the cdrom drive on autodetect

I have a Win95 disk. I put that in and it did it correct. So I then swaped to the CD drive and tried "setup". that's when it said it can't be run in DOS.

yes, winnt is the initial setup file while setup.exe is some part of the setup when you have gone through the iniitial phase and are running win2k.

I tried that and it said it couldn't find the file. Remember, I've got a Win95 bootdisk.

This is tedious, but it could work -- Since the message is that you can't run the install from DOS, try a clean install of Win95 (boring, I know). Don't bother with anything more than a minimum setup, but then, try installing Win2K as an upgrade over that installation.

Good luck. :)

If you don't set the bios to boot from CD first, it won't work. Is it scsi?

No, it's IDE. When I try to boot from CD now, it just sits there. It doesn't ask for another disk anymore. It's just sits and the CD continues to spin.

So what are the steps I should be following? Is it...

-Run fdisk and create a primary DOS
-The format C
-Run setup from CDROM?

Is it something like that? It's just been so long since I've reformatted I can't even remember what I'm doing.
