Need some opinions on gas furnaces

So we need a new furnace. We have a couple companies coming out to do estimates.

The first company quoted Carrier equipment. Does anyone have experience/opinions of the brand?

Thanks

They are the brand to have around here. Of course, they are headquartered here. I had a new ~95% Carrier furnace installed at my last house. No issues with it.

Carrier does have a good reputation but, proper sizing and installation are way more important than brands.

so true...the furnace has to be efficient and able to handle the sq ft of the house...a under rated furnace will crap out sooner than you think...Trane is also a good brand to look at
We just had our furnace replaced under insurance since the AC valve was leaking and leaked right into the furnace taking the unit out....

I'd stay away from that brand, parts are controlled by there dealer network and as such are hard to find. In oRder to keep your warranty you have to have them service the unit every year. If it breaks down yOur limited in who you can call for service. All that and you still pay a premium price.

I don't know what part of the country you live in, but most people in the midwest are replacing their furnaces with heat pumps. Heat pumps (depending on your location in the country) will definately save you over furnaces.

Good to know. This particular dealer is offering 10 years parts AND labor warranty. We probably won't be in the house that long so we are covered there, just have to worry about regular service as you said.

Probably the "better" gas furnaces with the least trouble are:

Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Carrier, Rheem, Ruud, Lenox---in that order. (Rheem and Ruud are made by the same manufacturer.)

I'd look into those brands and work down by price and efficiency.

Bryant = Carrier.

If you're not going to be in the house very long, going with a higher efficiency furnace will probably never give you the payback over your time in the house. Note: the federal government is mandating all furnaces installed after May, 2013 be at least 90% efficient.

Our furnace is in an attic and we've been advised that the high efficiencies don't perform well/cause problems in that environment.
