cool. the great thing is when you've learned somethign the first time, it only takes a short while to get it again....

i've learned it at PEMDAS, but of course the MD and AS are reversible.

Actually you don't even need to use PEMDAS here, just write the (y*0.2) as 0.2y and you can easily solve it.

If he's 27, he probably knew it and just forgot since you don't do problems like that at work. And if your job does require math like that often, they'll have a computer/calculator do it and not risk human error.

I lot of old-time engineers are surprised that the kids today don't know how to use slide rules.

You can make that generalization about ANY subject. For your information, we do use algebra (not algrebra) often enough that it is important to know. If your everyday life consists of asking your customers if they want fries with that, then you have a bigger problem at hand than not knowing algebra.

Basic algebra actually comes in very handy and is pretty common in our lives. For example, say a DVD is 25% off, and the discount is $12.50. Most people without using algebra wouldn't know wtf the actual price is (doing it without algebra, all you would have to do is multiply the $12.50 by 3 to get the current price).
