Need some math help here

Here is the equation:

(y * 0.2) - y = 33500

What is y?

It would be educational to me if you showed how you derived this.

I know this is fairly simple I just can't remember my basic algebra enough to figure out how to do it.

(y * 0.2) is just 0.2y

0.2y - y = 33500

(0.2y - y) is like doing 0.2 - 1, so we get:

-0.8y = 33500

then we divide both sides by -0.8

y = -41875

0.2*y-y=33500
Factor out a y to get: (0.2-1)*y=33500
Order of operations says do parentheses first so we get -0.8*y=33500
Divide both sides by -0.8 to get your answer of y=-41875

Unless you americans are different

was always taught to do the multiplication first, what if there is a 4*5 over a 2? doing the m first makes more sense

Thank you! I guess I would have got it if I notated it correctly. It was the Multiplication symbol and the minus sign that were causing me fits cause i thought i had to find a way to rectify those first...
