I ordered a Dell P4 1.7ghz, 512 Rdram, 64mb GeForce 2mx video card, w/ Win XP o/s. This will be used mostly for home & running Cad/Cam for manufacturing. (MasterCam, GibbsCam, SurfCam etc.)

I notice they only use a 250w power supply while most cases you'd use to byo system come w/ either 300w or 330w power supplies. How does Dell get away w/ the 250w power supply? Is this acceptable?

I've heard they use their own type of power supply so maybe they have every thing configured so they don't need more. They have an outstanding reputation so I'd figure they know what they are doing.

Any ideas or info appreciated.

they DO know what they are doing. the power supply will work with no problems. the only way you MAY get into trouble is if you try to change or add things to the system that take more power. OEMs (Dell, Gateway, etc) make computers that work perfectly(most of the time) with there factory configs but since there power supplies are scaled to the exact power needs to save money, you might run into problems if you change things later on. but on the other hand, its not hard at all to get a better power supply if you decide to change things.

So if I add a printer & a scanner/copier, is this what you mean by adding things on that'll consume power?

What about the sound /speaker set-up that comes w/ it?

Adding printers, scanners, copiers, etc. will have no affect on your power supply at all since they have their own power supplies (i.e. they plug into the wall). Adding components like hard drives, optical drives, case fans, etc. might be more of a problem since they run off your computer's power supply.

Sugadaddy was just pointing to his signature which is quoting that utterly retarded "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!" guy.

Thanks, I wasn't thinking about those items having their own power supply.

AzFAL, did you ever consider building your own PC?

John, actually I've flip-flopped back & forth all last week over that issue.

I was wanting to go w/ a SiS645 based mobo but they don't seem readily available. My other concerns were any bugs in a new technology & mobo & having to figure out any incomptablility issues that may arise.

I really like Dell's tech support & warranty option as I usually don't have time to spend trying to figure out some obscure or even common computer problem. Also I figure the Dell system ought to more than meet my needs for the next 5-6 years.

I applaud your decision. I use a Dell at work and man that PC kicks. I think you'll be very happy with your new PC;)

you will not enjoy using ANY computer built today more than 3 years from now. Yes it will still work...but damn it will be slow. That said, dont pay $3000 for something that's going to be obsolete..buy a $1500 box and 2 years from now buy another one :)
