Need some information on "Distributed Computing"....

Hello,

I have been doing some reading on SETI, the whole thing sounds cool and I would love to take part in it. I just have a few questions though.

What exactly is "Distributed Computing"?
What are the cons and pros?

Well, thats all I can think of right now, I am sure I will think of more and when I do, I will post again.

Thanks all,
Pete

BigPete,
I am not running seti, I am on the rc5 project. but probably the same principle. Seti is using what resources are available at the given time, fire up a game (UT) or any good size app and see what happens.:Q

Oh by the hello Big Pete and welcome. Im sure some of the seti guys will be in to help ya shortly.

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome, I am glad to be here. Anand has some of the friendliest forums around.

Pete 🙂

Welcome, BigPete! 😀

Distributed Processing, is basically using wide spread and diverse computing power (many individual's PCs, multiple OSs) over a network (usually the Internet) to process work.

SETI analyzes radio frequency signals captured looking for specific patterns and anomolies that could be from a non-natural source, such as other life forms.

RC5 uses a brute force method to search for a specific encrypted key. This contest is sponsored by RSA, to prove how strong their encryption is.

Most if not all distributed projects clients will run the PC at 100% CPU utilization, but are set at the lowest priority, so anything that you do, whether it be gaming, word processing, or surfing, will get the PC resources it needs.

The only negative that I can think of is that there is more heat generated due to running at full load. this is only an issue if you have very poor cooling, as the system may be unstable.

Many people including myself see this as a positive feature, and use the distributed clients as a stress test on systems, as it will help pinpoint systems that would have problems under full load with any application.

Some of the positives are having fun, learning a lot about networks, PCs, overclocking, operating systems, games, etc. The fellowship of team mates, the thrill of competition with friends and other teams, having fun with statistics, and did I mention having fun? 😀

Others more knowledgeable can help discuss other distributed projects that are going on, some even have the potential to help understand and even cure some diseases. 🙂

Thanks, its a solo project right now, if there is anything you would like to contribute let me know, its just for fun right now...

Pete

P.S. Thanks for all the info on Distributed Computing...

I posted this in the software forum as well. What kind of software can I use to keep an eye on mobo temps during all this? And is there something that will shut the puter down if it gets too hot? I have Abit KT7A-RAID with a 1.3 Tbird, dont want that burning up...

Thanks again,
Pete

There is one that is called MotherBoard monitor. I can't remember where I go it, I did a search for it and found it. You might want to serach in the overclockers forum for motherboard monitor. Any decent O/Cer has something to monitor temps.

With SETI, is there anyway to see how much you have actually accomplished?

Also, how does the group thing work? I might get my CS clan involved..

Pete

<< MBM 5.0 is a pain in my rear, hard as heck to use >>

???

I like it, but anyway there should be the Via hardware monitor that came with your install CD for the Abit board If you prefer that.

Hey, BigPete --

First of all, welcome to the TeAm!

I have the same MB as you and I use Motherboard Monitor. Let me know where you're having problems getting it configured and I'll let you know how I have mine set up. It can be a bit confusing at first, but once you get everything configured, it's really a great product.

<With SETI, is there anyway to see how much you have actually accomplished?>

Go here: SETI STATS and check the links under statistics. That's what most of us live for, our stats! 😉😉

If you want to get your CS clan involved and still help Team Anandtech, you can create an email addy that relates to your clan, have everyone use it to process work units. Then use that email addy to join Team Anandtech.

The only problem with that approach is you lose track of individual stats. I think you may be able to run a "proxy" that could collect the clan's work units run statistics on them, then send the WUs on to SETI. Don't know much about it, but Orange Kid is doing that for the team, you can ask him how to do it. 🙂

Or you could just have each clan member use their own email addy and join Team Anandtech, and change the "nickname" on the user account to a standard for the clan. You could even have a link to your webpage as part of the nickname. 🙂

Check out the TA stats HERE 😀

BigPete, if your deadset on not using motherboard monitor, check out tweakfiles under diagnostics and you will find several programs for monitoring temps. I'm sure you will find one you like. Welcome to the team 🙂

I would like to add my WELCOME to the team. I'm interested in this thread because I'm considering getting a few TBird setups.

I'll be monitoring. 🙂

BigPete

Welcome to The search 🙂 ,btw are you in TA ? I couldn't find ya name in the realtime TA list

BTW I also didn't like MBM5 ,that's why I have stuck with MBM4 ,give that a try ,it's GUI is totally different.

Ray
Try my link it ,the TA stats shown are realtime 🙂

Guys,

All this distributed stuff is new to me. I didnt even know until now that Anandtech has a group, I would be more than happy to join for them. As far as MBM goes, I am using 5.0 right now, its ok I guess. If I have any questions I will be sure to let you guys know.

BigPete: Welcome to the team! We're always glad to have new members, especially those who post in the forums with us addicts! And if you can bring your CS team into told we'll love you even more. Maybe Assimilator1 will even send you some beer and babes? Don't hold your breath on them though, mine are still "in the mail". 😉

If you have any questions ask away. There's almost always someone here to help! 🙂

Rob
