For some reason my system resources get VERY low while just ruuning a few programs. I had 2 IE windows up and AIM running in the backgroud and my system was at 50% free. I've got 512MB RAM, why is the world is it so low? Anybody have any ideas? BTW, I haven't changed my virtual memory settings either.

Windows98 is one of the worst (second only to Windows95 AFAIK) OSes in terms of memory handling. IIRC, there is some bug with Windows98 if you have 512+ MB of RAM. I don't remember the specifics of the bug, but you might want to try searching the forums. Or, you might want to try upgrading to Windows2000.

I have Win2K but hate using it. Is there any virtual memory settings I can change to get better performance?

Hate win2k? That's odd. Anyway, no, I don't think there's anything you can do to change it -- as I said, I think it's a bug. You may want to try searching this forum (and the OS forum, and the Tech. Support forum) for similar questions, I know it's been brought up before.

Well thanks for your help.

I don't like Win2K because I don't like the networking and other extras it has. I just like the ease at which Win98SE works. Great OS if you ask me🙂

With that amount of memory in win98se, I would recommend setting some fixed size swap file, and in system.ini under [386enh] add the line ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
btw If you want some really effective memory handling, go win2k😉
