Dear ATOT,

I'm here on a desperate plea. My girlfriend has been attempting to find a fashion-related internship in NYC for January - March, 2010. She has continued to apply and apply to many different places (over 20, I believe) and yet hasn't heard many responses.

I've tried to help her understand that American companies often don't respond, or take their sweet time in doing so, and she's becoming discouraged. We are in Paris, and she has never been to the US, but it's her dream!

I know this is an IT forum, but if anyone happens to have a personal connection to someone in the fashion field, please help! She is hoping for an unpaid full-time internship in fields related to Public Relations, Buying, Showroom, Press and pretty much anything else.

She attends a well respected Fashion School here (ESMOD-ISEM) and aces her classes. Her English is nearly flawless, her French is perfect, and she also speaks Swedish, Finnish and a bit of Italian.

If any of you can help, would you email me?

Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!

This is a serious plea, guys.

No, I'm not going to post photos of her.

If you don't have any way to help, then please just pass on posting.

It's barely 2 weeks after Fashion Week here, it's possible a lot of these companies are just now getting to filtering through resumes for internships.

/yes, i know shes not looking to be a model

Your gf may need to just come to nyc for 3 months, socialize, and hopefully meet someone who knows an opening. Maybe attend a class or two at FIT to get access to the school resources. Otherwise it's going to be really hard to stand out among all those applications.

Crono,

Thank you very much. That's something that I hadn't taken into consideration!

A good site that puts up mentions of internships (but that means she'll also have that many more competitors) is racked.com.

I would say one of the biggest internships available right now is for the Sartorialist - he has a listing up on new york's craigslist I think. I doesn't hurt that he's dating Garance Dore, who's a Frenchwoman.

tell her to file more applications.

so what kinda of internship does she consider it fashion, has she think of taking something on the logistic side or want to stay on the more "fashionista" side.

It's madness ! Okay, I've removed it from both quotes and the original.

Would you do the same?

Temper your expectations, the unemployment rate for the age range of internships (18-24) is around 50% in America, so expect lots of heavy competition from a base of applicants that won't require any visa work at all.
