I'm building a computer for someone and their current computer can burn VHS to DVD. What kind of hardware does that? Also, currently their computer cannot function while doing this (I'm having trouble understanding wtf they're doing). Is there a way to allow their computer to go while they do this? I don't really understand what they're doing... if someone could elaborate on that, too, that would be appreciated.

They are probably using a Composite Video input device to convert the analog signal to a file, then make a DVD from it. Many places sell "kits" for this purpose that gives you a generic box that allows you to hook it to a VCR via Composite Video, Svideo or F type Coax. Then they have a software suite that takes the captured video file and makes it DVD friendly files for you to burn or it simply burns the DVD itself.

Ok, thanks. Can you see any reason why they can't use their computer while doing this?

Other than the load. If their computer is borderline in processing power, it might take all the PC can throw at it to churn everything out. I know my old socket A AMD system had a hard time keeping up whan I was doing serious video crunching.

For example, see here: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=230100033-DT

Many manufacturers make them in all flavors. ATI has their VIVO vid cards and there are USB and regular PCI offerings as well.

If their capturing is Done by the main Video card they probably can not use the Video/monitor to do something else.

As posted by Gillbot they have to use/install and independent Video capture card.

There are PCI cards that can be installed in the case as well as outside ones that work via USB.

It is hard to make a focus recommendation without real technical data.
