My older sister just called from college ballin her eyes out because she saved over a research paper with an older version of the paper. Shes runnin XP, and i need to know quick if there is anyway to get the new version of this paper back?

i know this belongs in software but i need to know very soon, my sister is crying her eyes out on the phone to my mom right now.

hey man. im sorry but i dont really know what can be done. im thinking you can't do anything about it.

i feel really bad for your sister, but tell her she's just got to get back to it.

if you've posted in software, see if they suggest something. maybe it was autosaved and there's an additional backup somewhere? im not sure....

the other dudes are jackas$es, but i hope your sister manages to get through this. we've all had this happen to us in some way, shape, or form.
 
Why doesn't Word have a built-in version management system for this kind of sh1t? One that auto-saves every x minutes and keeps a revision history of, say, 10-20 saves. This kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME, and with hard drive space being virtually limitless these days, it would make sense to add this type of feature.

Shes really having a hard time with this. She lost about 10 pages. 🙁
 
Ouch, that sucks. My only suggestion would be to use the search feature to search for any files that have been saved in like the last hour or so (assuming she has been working on it today and then like *just* overwrote it). Check through the .tmp files or anything that looks like it could be a temp file. If that comes up with nothing, then I'm out of ideas, sorry.
 
Do a search in the software forum (faster than asking in the wrong forum even). There has been plenty of threads about data recovery in there. I don't know if any of them will help, but if she DOESN'T KEEP BACKUPS, I can't much care. 😛

Ok, I guess I care enough to tell you to search. Maybe for something along the lines of r-studio. I'm not sure if that's what I'm really thinking of, but it's the name in my mind at the moment. Good luck, and buy her some cd-rs.
 
Maybe check out some of the temp files, link. Some of the data might still be around.

I hate to say this but I wouldn't really hold out on recovering the data.

"When you click Save on the File menu, the following happens:
1. Word builds a new temporary file using the edited version of the document.
2. After Word creates the temporary file, Word deletes the previous version of the document.
3. Word renames the temporary file to the same name as the previous version of the document.
