Need some help with Sony CPD-G400

I don't know if this is a tube problem or whatnot but I seem to have a few problems with my Sony G400.

It seems that when I turn the monitor off at night, (but I leave the computer on) and turn it on at morning, the screen has shifted to the right about 4-5 pixels. I have to shift the screen back to the left everytime I turn this thing on. The funny thing is that it only happens when the monitor has been off more than an hour. Anything below that time, it does not happen.

Another problem is that I'm currently running this on 1600x1200 resolution. When I go to Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Adapter and try changing the refresh rate to the highest possible (85hz), the video quality gets worse. The screen is tad shaky, display is blurry and less brighter. Currently using a Elsa Gladiac SDR GeForce card... (if video card matters for these cases) The picture seems the best at "Optimal" or "Adapter default" setting... (which shows at 60hz when I go into monitor menu)

Do I have a defective monitor and if so, for those that had to exchange your G400, what's the usual procedure? Bought mine from Onvia by the way.

I have a 2 Sony G500s and have the same problem.

I believe it has to do with warming up the electron gun.

If you wait like 15 mins the image should stretch back out to the settings you had before.

Hmm in that case it's probably better for me to leave the silly power management for the monitor on.

I just got off chat with Sony online tech support and they said it's not the tube but both the refresh rate and this problem is related to the video card settings. For some reason even with all the fuss about how sucky Sony's tech support is, I might be able to believe their claim about the video card since I'm using the 6.18 Detonator 3 drivers under WinME and it crashes alot. It could be the drivers or it could be the video card itself... but then again it still could be the bad tube 😛 If anyone has more answers, please feel free to post them.

There theory is really easy to test. Plug the monitor into another machine that uses a different video card and drivers. If the problem also occurs, you can tell them that the monitor has the same problem on two different video cards and drivers. They made a major design flaw if 2/2 of the set-ups you tried do not work which I doubt would be the case since I know a few people using G400s with no problems. So IMO, if both set-ups don't work then its a bad monitor.

How about the refresh rate? Is it true it's my video card? What can I do to have it show properly on 85hz refresh rate?

I have a G400 too,
Nothing touching this on my unit, hovewer, there is a little hissing sounds coming from the back every 5 seconds or so? anyone one knows if this might a static high voltage problem?

I got the unit about two weeks ago, will probably get a new one...

Any one you guys are hearing any sounds?

Thanks,

A.) Always let a monitor warm up before you adjust or judge the image.

B.) I'd blame the RAMDAC on the video card for the loss in image quality when you go to 1600x1200@85.

C.) As for noise, yes the G400's do seem to be noisy under operation, and it does sound a lot like static, but I have no idea what it is exactly.

One other thing, I went through 3 G500s before I got ones that were acceptable to me.

The first unit had a memory setting problem. I would resize the screen and change the geometry settings etc. but every time I turned the monitor off the settings would get erased. The other 2 monitors had bad geometry problems which I returned.

I've been writing a lot about my monitors on the forum so I don't want to sound redundant but I believe Sony has some bad quality control problems with their FD monitors. If you do as the other guys said and the problems persist I would say you also got stuck with a dud monitor. The only consolation is that Onvia has an excellent return policy (I got mine from the too) in which they shipped me out a new monitor before I shipped back my busted ones (it was fun to have over 90 inches of monitors in my bedroom hehe). Plus shipping was free too.

In any event, since you shelled out so much for your monitor I would suggest sending it back anyway.
