Need some help with Seti@Home

I've got one of my squad members that I setup on Sunday with the CLI and SetiDriver running at the Lowest Priority. His computer is a PIII @ 667 MHz. He is running it 24/7. He has just called to tell me he is still working on his 1st WU....SetiDriver is showing an estimated time of 2 days + some hours. What the fxxx!

He had just done a fresh update on his computer ala Gateway. You know...the reformat and reinstallation of Windows and everything. The computer seemed to be working smoothly and quickly. I'm wondering if the WU he downloaded is corrupted in some fashion. Is there a way to just dump a WU part way through and start on another one?

How can you tell which WU he's working on. All of the folders in my Seti folder (1, 2, 3, etc.) have 9 files with a size of 348 KB.

I would be concerned as well!
This will tell ya which folder Seti is working in.
That machine should complete in ~9 hrs. btw. I would try a restart of the machine & see if that helps. 🙂

The computer has been restarted. He had a respectible free resources of 72% when he first gave me a ring.

I just had him read off to me the open programs in the "Close Program" folder. Spelling may be wrong on some of these but you will get the idea:

explorer
sk9910BM ??? I don't know what that may be
seti@home 3.....
hidserv ???
dssagent ??? Think this is Norton AntiVirus Stuff
.32 ??? "
navapw.32 ??? "
systray
setidriver
winoldalp
gwtray ???

Can the CLI Client run with Norton AntiVirus?

Any ideas.

To save a trip over to his house what folders should I have him delete...if any?

Processes that begin with "navap" are Norton auto-protect. I run various versions of Norton AV (98/2000/2001) on all of my systems and the CLI gets along fine with all of them.

You really ought to know what % cpu time STI is getting before deleting WU's ,as it may not fix it if something else is hogging cpu time.

Possible trojan that Norton isn't detecting?

BTW, SETI Driver works fine with Norton 2000...I've done it. 🙂

I'd run ATM or a program like that to check SETI's CPU usage.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to go over to his house. I would be forever on the phone talking him through finding, downloading, installing, and using atm. 😉

I'll be back! /like in the movie ala Arnold 🙂

Well, I was unable to get over to my buddy's house but I just got this email from him.

Smokeball, that [error message] box that I told you that came up [on boot-up] was from Norton , it said "unable to load the selected scan, if this is a custom scan delete it and create it again".

Is it possible that Norton is conflicting with the CLI/SetiDriver and somehow the CLI/SetiDriver is being crippled/slowed down?

I will have him turn off Norton and see if the problem still exists. He has been working on the same WU since late Sunday afternoon and it is now Wednesday morning. Or maybe he has found ET! 😀

I plan on bringing a floppy with me with ATM to check that out. Thanks for the tip(s).

Hey smokey. Try it on normal priority. If the computer acts really sluggish he has some other problems. I use all mine on normal. All the way down to a 366 celeron laptop. It does seem to be a bit slow, but hell I get paid by the hour when im at work 😉

solution...

c:> format c:
c:> d:\setup

Put the man onto w98se or better yet w2k. Im waiting on my w2k to come via my works corp IT guy 😛

Get rid of all the Gateway $hit on that comp!! I hate when OEMs put trash on an otherwise perfect(well as perfect as MS can make it) computer. Hell get rid of the virus protection!! 😱 😛

Most imprtantly GET THAT COMPUTER CRUNCHING... GO BLUE!

Here's the update on my buddies Gateway. I went over to his house armed with ATM and other various floppies and CDS. When I get there, the CLI is just crunching away like nobodys business. It was just about done with its 3rd 🙂 WU. While I was there it finished it and I checked the SetiLog to find that it had done 3 WUs in just over 30 hours. ???? What the F...? The first WU tooks 2 1/2 days!

But not according to SetiLog. It appears that the computer got hung up somewhere, somehow...probably with that damn Norton AV error message. He didn't report any problem to me for over two days. When he did report, as I have already said, SetiDriver was estimating 2 days 10 hours. I remember having him restart the computer which must have cleared things up...he had never shut it down since Sunday night when he did a restart and got the error message...you know the one he reported to me on TUESDAY. :|

He wouldn't let me uninstall Norton and it is HIS computer.🙂 But at least I cleaned up all the trash in his startup by going through msconfig. So the problem has seemed to clear up but the mystery remains. I've got a sneaky feeling this is not the last problem I'm going to have with his computer. 🙁

But at least it crunching SETI now. 😀

Thanks for the all the suggestions and helpful advice. I'll probably be back again...but I hope not too soon. 😉

I didn't install ATM but it is on my SETI FLOPPY [along with the CLI and the SetiDriver] that I always carry with me....just in case. 😉
