Ok, I bought Half-Life Counterstrike, and have had nothing but trouble trying to connect to a server. It tells me I am connected, and that it is precaching. It takes a very long time to do this, then it says it is done , locks up, and boots me off the server. I emailed Sierra, and they gave me some tips to try. I updated my Direct X to version 8, edited the Woncomm.1st file to change the first AUTH entry, and updated my Device Drivers like they said too. I also entered console -nojoy -noipx -heapsize 28000 in the target line under properties, all under instruction from Sierra. While it seems improved, it is still taking to long to precache and booting me off. I just wanted to know if any of you had some other tips or tricks I could try out. Thanks in advance! :)

Oh, and I suppose you should know I have a Pentium 200 mhz processor with 32 megs of ram. I know, its old, but its all I have until next month.

I need tips on faster precaching too, because I always get booted the first time I do it and have to reconnect before I can get CS to work. I think GF is having the same problem.

Many people had problems with the game crashing back to desktop or hardlocking system as well as the problem you mention. Check your IRQ's to be sure your video card is not sharing with a selfish item. Drivers are also critical with this game depending on system configuration.

She has a 4mb old ATI card (not a rage). Its a VT3 or something, but that's still a 3D card.

Or there is always option B, beat my head against the wall until I am unconcious. At least then I will be out of my misery!!!! :p

I tried everything I was supposed to. PaulVitti: I did everything Sierra said to reduce memory use, and it still does not work.

the ppl who coded CS put in a boot feature for ppl who pre-cache too long. This prevents any laggers from playing (i think...) Simplest way to get around this is:

1)get a faster comp with more ram :)
2)when it boots you off, just relog on to that server. Since you will have most of the data cached, it'll pre-cache faster and you'll be able to log in.

Hope that helps...

There was a post before on CS forums regarding computers with 32MB could not load the game. I forgot what the command is but you might want to try CS forums. Just so you know, my room mate has a P200 MMX w/ 32MB memory and his computer can load CS but it's just a terrible experience.

Make sure you have high cache...like the swap file...etc....

No other programs running in the background.

I have to connect twice everytime also. after you connect the first time just type retry in the console ad it will reconnect.

My son played with 32 megs RAM on an AMD K6-2 350. It was slow and the onboard video required a small (3 X 2 1/2 or so) window to play. This was before new patches and such from Valve. We mostly play TFC now and I built 2 systems for gaming.

I got the name Paladin from an old tv show of that name. I added the .exe for an identifier. I was executable as a newbie and I played medic in TFC. Medics (like .exe's) spread viruses.

I have only recently tried CS.

When Half-Life counterstrike was first releeased I was playing on a 200mhz pentium MMX with 32mb EDO ram and the same video card and it ran fine, maybe not the best, and yes it did take FOREVER to join the server but it was still playable. Do you buy any chance have a HP?

Yea the precaching is very long for me too since version 1.0 . I had no problems with 7.1 though. I think it's the new models they introduced. Im using the halflife mod version(not retail) if it matters.

Hmmm... Can't help you but I'm just glad to see you're no longer stuck in Off Topic. ;)

All I know is that my nephew essentially couldn't do much with some of his games until he upgraded is 32 MB machine to 96. Certain levels would hang, etc.

Yup i had a smiliar prob with a client of mine... if it gets booted off retry, but his computer was so damn slow it didn't matter. I would recommend trying changing the video settings (like opengl and direct3d.. if on software it takes longer to start i think).

Also, [team-HI] (names we ppl from hawaii use when going on mainland cs servers) members are not cheaters, we are just that good. check us out as cs.aloha.net and join flar.aloha.net and drone.aloha.net to get raped =).

judging from some of the specs you have, it would prolly be best to upgrade before playing anyway because you wouldn't be impressed if you got into a game thats for sure. :(

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for trying to help. I tried all the advice in this thread, and still no go. But I appreciate everyone who tried. :)

Eug: Actually, I lurk around these other boards alot, I just don't post here. Believe me, if I tried to help anyone with my degree of expertise, they would throw tomatoes at me. ;)

girlfriday

try some of the cs forums

beyond all the "I'm an asshole and I"m about to make a jerk of myself" comments, you'll get some people who have nothing better to do than help someone.
