I ordered ADSL with 5 static IP addresses. I have 4 comps I wish to connect to these addresses. I have NIC cards and am going to get the CAT5 cable.

What else do I need?

Help?

You don't need to share the connection if you have 5 ips and only 4 PCs... Just plug your ADSL modem into your hub, and if your ISP give u static IPs then give each PC a static IP... if dynamic IP then just have each of them get one from ISP automatically...

You need to connect your DSL modem to a 5port hub at least. 4ports for the computers and 1 for the DSL modem. That's it, just hook up the ethernet wire. Then just configure the ip/gateway/dns setting on all the computers as specified by your dsl provider. You may not have to do this if they run a DHCP server, in that case, you probably just have to plugin and surf. I doubt they are running DHCP.

Some ADSL providers supply a modem(internal or external) for you to install in one computer. If this is the case you'll need either a 5 port hub or switch (your choice) to share the network with the 4 computers. If they are not providing you with an ADSL modem, take a look at the linksys 4 port switch with built in ADSL router. It costs $170 and would do what you're looking for. You can buy them at staples, CompUSA, Buy.com etc.

Good luck!

I have mindspring dsl, and they only provide a dynamic ip adress, and I have no idea how to share it between a few other computers. I already have a 5260 modem.

Thanks alot,

All you needed is only one IP and a dsl/cable sharing router and a 5 to 10 port hub
10/100 auto sensing. Could save you some money on the long run.

Im getting an external modem. Ya I guess "sharing" isnt the right verb.

I think Im going to go with a hub since the network won't be all that big or have alot of load placed on it.

Thanks for the replies.

ditto, i dont think you can chare a dynamic ip that easily. i dont want to have a computer that is always on. Ive heard somewhere that you can just attach a switch ors omething to the modem to get 3 dynamic ip's
