Wiring up a 1/8" stereo jack like the one in the pic below. I have 4 wires to attach R+, R-, L+ and L- but the jack only has 3 receptacles. Do I just combine the L- and R- into one?

Pic of the jack I have

A couple questions: What is the application? Also, is each channel supposed to be a balanced signal (meaning 3 conductor with R- and L- and Ground). If the R- & L- are actually the grounds, then they can share the common post like you said. But if the signals are balanced and grounded elsewhere in the device, then you should use 2 1/4" jacks.

Application is to add a 1/8" stereo jack to my Pioneer head unit. I have the IP Bus hack completed and spliced in a 1/8" stereo to R and L RCA jacks. Coming from the head unit I have 4 wires R+,R-,L+,L-. I took these and matched them up with the Right and Left of the cable I was using and it sounds great. Look at this it will probably explain what I want to do better than I can. I want to replace the 1/8" plug with the 1/8" jack.
